EXCLUSIVE: INTERVIEW WITH THOMAS YOUNGBLOOD OF KAMELOT!!
FLORIDA-BASED PROG/POWER METAL GOD, KAMELOT HAS JUST RELEASED THEIR THE NEWEST ALBUM “HAVEN”!!
結成は 1991年。今年で記念すべき25周年を迎えるシンフォニックなUS産 POWER/PROG METAL バンド KAMELOT。その存在感は作品を重ねるごとに増し、今では押しも押されぬ POWER METAL の代表的なバンドになりました。ただ彼らの歩んできた道は決して平坦ではなく、”POETRY FOR THE POISNED” 発表後バンドの顔であり KAMELOT サウンドの体現者であったボーカル ROY KHAN がメンタルの問題から突然脱退し騒然となった事は記憶に新しいですね。新任は SEVENTH WONDER の TOMMY KAREVIK。実力者であることは判っていましたが、はたして KAMELOT に合うのだろうかと多くのファンがヤキモキしながら待ちわびた前作 “SILVERTHORN” はトミーが KAMELOT に合わせ込んできた印象。違和感は驚くほど少なかった気がします。それから3年。最新作 “HAVEN” がリリースされました。前作ですでに感じていた事ですが、 ロイの脱退によりソングライティングチームがロイ/トーマスからトーマス/オリバーに移行。”GHOST OPERA” 以降増していた、良く言えば芸術性の高い悪く言えばとっつきにくいロイ色が減退しています。今作はキーボーディストの OLIVER PALOTAI がさらに積極的に関わる事でゴシック色を強め、妖艶さから美しい歌メロにシフトが完了したように感じました。傑作 “BLACK HALO” とはまた違ったベクトルを持った名作の誕生です。ギタリストでメインソングライターの THOMAS YOUNGBLOOD は決してシュレッダーではないですし、リフメイカーと言う訳でもありません。そこが物足りないというプログメタルファンもいるでしょう。ただストリングス、クワイア、コンセプトを駆使して KAMELOT 独特の世界観を構築する事に関しては並々ならぬ才能を持った総合プロデューサー的彼の手腕はやはり高く評価されて然るべきだと思います。THOMAS に話が聞けました。なぜかロイに関する質問はNGでしたがどうぞ！！
【INTERVIEW WITH THOMAS YOUNGBLOOD】
Q1: Your new album “Haven” is just out now!! How are you feeling now?
【THOMAS】: We feel great! It was a ton of work and stress and to have it out now is a huge relief. Also seeing the results worldwide is very exciting. .
Q1: 新作 “HAVEN” がリリースされましたね！！今はどういったお気持ちですか？ また反響はいかがですか？
【THOMAS】: 最高だよ！莫大な仕事量とストレスだったからね。リリースする事が出来てとても安心しているよ。世界的な売れ行きを見てとても興奮しているんだ。
Q2: At first, I’d like to say ‘Haven” is one of the greatest modern Power Metal album and new masterpiece in your library. Anway, “Haven” is the album that has Kamelot sound from opening to closing. But also, we can listen to some new aspects. This time, Oliver participates in all writing process. So, I think keyboard sound increase. Also, Thomas makes some really heavy/modern riffs that was not in your past works. So, musically, what did you aim for in this album? And would you tell us the concept or lyrical themes of “Haven”?
【THOMAS】: Its not a concept but has a theme. One of most important aspects of a Kamelot album should be the mix emotions on the record. Music is about emotion, and with Haven the listener is taken on a rollercoaster of emotions from start to finish. We touched on many subjects and it seems to have a redline throughout some of the songs. Again we always want to have the ebb and flow of all emotions, and that’s really what music is about, emotion. So on Haven we decided to make the record more in the now and future versus the 17th century as the previous record .
Q2: まずは “HAVEN”、素晴らしいアルバムですね。モダンプログメタルの傑作だと思いました。今回はキーボードの OLIVER が作曲に全面参加したことでキーボードサウンドが増えていると感じました。一方であなたの作るリフには過去にないほどへヴィーな感覚も宿っていますね。今回音楽的に目指したもの、アルバムのテーマやコンセプトを教えてください。
【THOMAS】: コンセプトじゃないんだけどテーマはあるね。KAMELOT のアルバムにおいて最も重要な要素はレコードで感情をミックスさせる事。音楽はまず感情を大事にするべきなんだ。”HAVEN” では最初から最後までリスナーを感情のジェットコースターに乗せるよ。僕たちは様々な主題を扱っている。幾つかの曲では越えてはならない一線を越えているかもしれないね。僕たちはいつも感情の満ち干きを表現したいんだ。音楽はそうあるべきだと思うよ。だから “HAVEN” では前のレコードのように17世紀について扱うよりも現在と未来について書こうと決めたのさ。
Q3: ARCH ENEMY’s Alissa White-Gluz (who has toured with KAMELOT in the past providing backup vocals), NIGHTWISH’s Troy Donockley and DELAIN’s Charlotte Wessels are guest appearance on “Haven”. And they add really nice feeling to the album. How did these collaborations happen?
【THOMAS】: We have toured both with Charlotte from Delain and Troy from Nigthwish and got to know them as people and they were both great and special talents. So when we came to finalizing UNDER GREY SKIES we thought it be great to add two of our good friends to this special piece of music to make it even more special. I really look forward to playing this one live.
Q3: ARCH ENEMY の ALISSA, DELAIN の CHALROTTE, NIGHTWISH の TROY がゲスト参加していますね。その経緯を教えてください。
【THOMAS】: DELAIN の CHALROTTE と NIGHTWISH の TROY とは一緒にツアーをして仲良くなったんだ。２人とも素晴らしい才能を持っていると判ったよ。だから “UNDER GREY SKIES” を仕上げる段階で、良き友である彼女たちに参加してもらえたら音楽がさらにスペシャルなものになると考えたんだ。この曲をライブで演るのが待ちきれないね。
Q4: I think most of Power Metal bands are required “Predictable” sounds from fans. Off Course, KAMELOT has also prog aspects. So, I think it’s not easy to keep the “balance” between them. What do you think about that?
【THOMAS】: Its a fine line of course but we are at a point in our career where we feel the fans can trust us and we really do whatever we feel is right for the time. I think our fans are actually not pleased with too much predictability. So they expect new ideas from us and we always go for that.
Q4: パワーメタルバンドの多くはファンから”予定調和”なサウンドを求められる節がありますよね。KAMELOT の場合勿論プログ的な要素も存在し、そのバランスを取るのは簡単ではないように思います。
【THOMAS】: うん、確かに紙一重ではあるよね。ただキャリアを積んできた今となってはファンは僕たちを信じてくれていると感じられるから、何であれ僕たちが本当に正しいと思うようにやれているんだ。僕たちのファンはあまり予定調和過ぎても喜ばないように思うしね。彼らは新しいアイデアを求めているし、だからこそ僕たちは常に前に進むことが出来るんだ。
Q5: It’s 25th anniversary of KAMELOT! Do you have any special plans of celebration?
【THOMAS】: We are not nostalgia type people, we live in the present and future. So the simple answer is no 😉
Q5: 今年は記念すべき KAMELOT の結成25周年ですが、何か特別な計画などはありますか？
【THOMAS】: 僕たちはノスタルジーを感じるようなタイプの人間ではないんだ。現在と未来に生きているからね。だからシンプルに答えると”NO”だ。
Q6: Lots of Japanese fans expect for New Live DVD of KAMELOT. Do you have a plan of making that? We are so happy to recording @Loudpark 2015! Haha!
【THOMAS】: Haha, that would be great! But our friends Dragonforce just did this so it would not be super unique. I can imagine a DVD with Loudpark as a bonus though.
Q6: 多くの日本のファンは KAMELOT の新しいライブDVDを心待ちにしていますよ。LOUDPARK2015を撮影していただければ嬉しいのですが( 笑 )
【THOMAS】: ハハハ( 笑 ) 嬉しいね！ただ友達の DRAGONFORCE がやったでしょ？だから凄くユニークと言う訳ではないかも知れないね。ただボーナスディスクとして付けるのは良いかも知れないな。
