NEW DISC REVIEW + INTERVIEW 【JASON KUI : NAKA】

EXCLUSIVE: INTERVIEW WITH JASON KUI !!

“Maybe I Am a Working Guitar Man, So I Always Get To Play Different Kinds Of Music, That Really Influences Me So Much, So That’s Why My Music Is More Diverse.”

DISC REVIEW “NAKA”

“Splash!” DREAM THEATER にポルカやマカロニウエスタンを移植する “Dance of Awakening The Spirit Part II, The Ballad of The Headless Horseman” の大胆不敵。

JASON KUI “NAKA” : 9.9/10

INTERVIEW WITH JASON KUI

Q1: This is the first interview with you. So, at first, could you tell us about yourself? What kind of music were you listening to, when you were growing up?

【JASON】: Hi all the Japanese readers. My name is Jason Kui, I was born in Hong Kong, currently living in the US. I have been playing professionally for over 10 years.
Apart from my solo project, I am also a studio session guitarist and tour as a sideman for pop stars from Hong Kong and other Asian countries.
I was always a metal/ shredding kind of guitar player when I was growing up. Until I discovered blues and funk when I was around 17.

Q2: What inspired you to start playing guitar? Who was your guitar hero at that time?

【JASON】: Definitely Van Halen. Right Here, Right Now Live video was the reason I started guitar. Probably Paul Gilbert, Paul is always one of my guitar heroes of all time.

VAN HALEN。”Right Here, Right Now” のライブビデオが僕がギターをはじめたきっかけなんだよ。

Q3: I had an interview with tfvsjs before, and they said “I guess culturally and politically we would like to identify ourselves to Hong Kong more than China.”. How about you? How is the technical/instrumental scene there?

【JASON】: Tfvsjs guys are my buddies, Anton, one of the drummers, is my drummer for my solo project other than Anup Sastry. I agree with them, as I said, I am from Hong Kong, and it’s very clear.
There are some instrumental bands like Tfvsjs, I think the math rock is very popular in Hong Kong. But not so many metal instrumental bands around.

Q4: OK, let’s talk about your newest record “Naka”. Actually, “Naka” means “center” in Japanese, haha. But what made you choose it?

【JASON】: Yes, it’s the Japanese word, Naka. 中 means middle, in between… It’s the principle of my living style.
In my recent life, I have been looking for a good balance of everything, life vs work; solo vs paid-work; technical vs melodic. It seems everything needs a right balance.
So, the word, “naka” pretty much describes my ideal life style.

Q5: One of the greatest drummer of modern prog scene, Anup Sastry played and mixed this record. What did he bring to this record?

【JASON】: If I am the farmer, Anup will be the cook. I give him materials then he crafts them. We have been great friends since my previous album, Absence of Words, Anup played drums on the entire album. He also came to Hong Kong a few times to play shows with me. We are so close, and I know his taste of sound, plus I wanted to make a heavier album, so I asked him to mixed it as well as recording drums.

Q6: Also, definitely incredible guitar players Joined in record. Andy Timmons, Andy James, Tom Quayle, and Poh Hock. How could you invite them?

【JASON】: It’s pretty crazy to have these incredible guitar stars on board. Many of them are already friends of mine before the recording. I met Andy Timmons couple times through Mesa Boogie’s events. We are the Boogie fellas. Mesa Boogie has been super great to me. Timmons played a beautiful, melodic solo on the title track, “NAKA”.
Then Andy James and I are the artists of a Polish cables/ Cabinets company, David Laboga aka DL Cables. When I was writng “Pixel Invasion”, I was already thinking about getting Andy to play the solo, so I reached out to David and David talked to Andy. Andy responded super fast, super professional! Of course, the solo he played was astonishing!
Then the fusion king, Tom Quayle, we met at Guitar Summit 2018 in North Carolina, USA, and we were roommates. After the Summit, we stay good friends. Tom plays a stunning solo on “Meanbird”.
Last but not least, the prog-metal young beast, Poh Hock. I met Poh Hock on Instagram, I was already a fan of his band, Native Constuct. He did a great job on “The Creator/The Destroyer”, he tastefully shredded the out hell out of it! Love it!

Q6: Andy Timmons, Andy James, Tom Quayle, Poh Hock

The Creator/The Destroyer” で素晴らしい仕事を残してくれたね。

Q7: I feel this is one of the most colorful guitar album to date. Metal, jazz, blues, folk(“Then and Now is really emotional!), classical, etc are mixed together seamlessly. I feel your music and guitar playing is close to Intervals or Plini, but sometimes you are more eclectic. Do you agree that?

【JASON】: I love both Intervals and Plini. They inspired me a lot. Maybe I am a working guitar man, so I always get to play different kinds of music, that really influences me so much, so that’s why my music is more diverse.

Q8: “Pixel Invasion” is typically, sometimes you use 8bit, video game sound in your music, right? Of course. Japan has big Anime, Game culture. Are you interested in these Otaku culture?

【JASON】: I wrote the majority of the song when I was on tour in Japan in late 2017. I was practicing at my hotel room in Shibuya. And you know Shibuya is always bustling and busy and I love it. Maybe that’s why I came up with such upbeat/ high energy riff in the intro. I am not a big anime fan or gamer, but I was young, I played Play Station all day, who doesn’t, right? haha
I was born in late 80’s, so I grew up with the original Game Boy, so the 8 bit thing means a lot to me. And I thought putting the riff I wrote in the hotel in Shibuya and the 8 bit retro vibe together was a cool idea, so I did it, and it seemed it worked! Thank you, Shibuya! hahaha
