DISC REVIEW “SIDEREAL LIGHT VOL.2”
「悲しいことに、僕たちの国はいまだに非常に分断されていて、多くの問題を抱えながら生きているんだ。だけどね、ラグビーのワールドカップで、僕らは国全体が団結して力を合わせることができることを証明したばかり。音楽も同じような効果をもたらすことができるよ。南アフリカではスポーツのような規模にはまだなっていないかもしれないけど、いつかそうなることを願っているよ」
南アフリカの立法府がおかれるケープタウン。テーブル・マウンテンや希望峰、テーブル湾が望める風光明媚なこの街にも、やはりアパルトヘイトの暗い影は残っています。白人が多く住む高級住宅街シーポイントの一方で、誇りと砂のケープ・フラッツには低所得者層が溢れています。そこは、かつてアパルトヘイトで強制移住させられたカラード (有色人種) たちの居住区。南アフリカで白人の入植が始まった “マザー・シティ” は、すべての人種にとって母なる街ではありません。暴動、窃盗、レイプ…それでもこの街とアフリカの壮大を愛するブラックメタル・バンド CROW BLACK SKY は音楽で憎しみや差別の壁を壊したいと焦がれます。
「僕たちは将来、間違いなくまた “黒い” ブラックメタルを作るだろう。でも今はもっと明るく、宇宙の威厳をたたえたサウンドを作りたかったんだ」
ゆえに CROW BLACK SKY は、絶望と狂気のブラックメタルにおける希望峰になりたいと望みます。テーブル・マウンテンから臨める漆黒の夜と降り注ぐ星々。それは、彼らに混沌とした宇宙の起源、星々のサガ、そして文明の不吉な未来を感じさせるに十分な壮観でした。歪んだ憎しみと差別がたどり着く世界は破滅。だからこそ、彼らはかつてアパルトヘイトを終わらせた音楽プロジェクト “サンシティ” のように、音楽で世界を変えたいのです。
「僕が聴く日本の音楽では、SIGH が最高の前衛ブラックメタルのアルバムをいくつか作っているし、素晴らしい日本のメタルバンドはたくさんある。去年の、IMPERIAL CIRCUS DEAD DECADENCE はぶっ飛んでいたよね！メタル以外では、MONO、特に “Hymn to the Immortal Wind” は僕にとって特別な存在だ」
そうして、CROW BLACK SKY が到達した場所こそ、コズミック・ブラックメタルでした。あまりに荘厳でメロディック。”Sidereal Light Vol.2″ はブラックメタルのルーツと豊かなアンビエンスが超次元で共存し、多層的な楽器編成、オーケストレーション、そしてプログレッシブなアイデアが両者の婚姻を祝福しています。伝統と革新、ルーツと先鋭、轟音と繊細、黒と白、絶望と希望。彼らの音楽は、そんな二律背反と混沌の中からワームホールを示現させ、光を見出します。MONO へのリスペクトも納得。
また、すべてが長尺の全4曲は非常に複雑でプログレッシブ。ブラックメタルでこれほど卓越したリード・ギターを聴くことはあまりありません。技術的にも可動域が広がった彼らの音楽は、そうしてスペイシーなシンフォニーから、超越的なトランスまで、文字通りブラックメタルの宇宙を拡大していくのです。
今回弊誌では、CROW BLACK SKY のコアメンバー2人、ギターの Gideon Lamprecht とボーカルの Ryan Higgo にインタビューを行うことができました。「BURZUM の “Filosofem” と DARKTHRONE の “A Blaze in the Northern Sky” を初めて聴いたときの感動は、今でも忘れられないよ。この感覚は僕の中にずっと残っていて、今でもいつも追いかけているものなんだ」 Devin Townsend のファンにもアピールしそうですね。どうぞ！！

INTERVIEW WITH CROW BLACK SKY
Q1: First of all, what kind of music were you listening to, when you were growing up?
【GIDEON】: My first favourite band was Dire Straits, which I discovered through my dad. As a teenager I went to sleep with Metallica playing on the radio. I discovered countless great metal bands in the years that followed, but I always returned to Opeth and Emperor the most.
【RYAN】: Growing up before I got into metal I first listened to stuff from my parents, a lot of classic rock and classical music, then bands like Sum 41, Linkin Park, Korn, then in 2005 Metallica had a big impact on me, along with Iron Maiden, and then came power metal, particularly Sonata Arctica’s first four albums, Stratovarius, and Blind Guardian. When I was 16 I discovered black metal, and that set me on a long journey. I traded music with friends at school, but there were only three other guys who were into it at my school. I still to this day remember the feeling the first time I heard Filosofem and A Blaze in the Northern Sky. It’s a feeling that will stay with me forever and I’m still always chasing it.

【GIDEON】: 最初に好きだったバンドは DIER STRAITS で、父の影響で知ったんだ。10代の頃は、ラジオから流れる METALLICA を聴きながら眠りについたものだよ。その後、数え切れないほどの素晴らしいメタル・バンドを知っていったけど、結局はいつも OPETH と EMPEROR に戻ってくるんだよね。
【RYAN】: メタルにハマる前は、まず両親からクラシック・ロックやクラシック音楽を聴かされて育った。16歳の時にブラックメタルに出会い、それが僕を長い旅へと導いてくれたんだ。
学校の友人たちと音楽を交換し合ったけど、僕の学校には他に3人しかブラックメタルにのめり込んでいるヤツがいなかったんだよね。そんな中でも、BURZUM の “Filosofem” と DARKTHRONE の “A Blaze in the Northern Sky” を初めて聴いたときの感動は、今でも忘れられないよ。この感覚は僕の中にずっと残っていて、今でもいつも追いかけているものなんだ。
Q2: What is the state of the metal scene in South Africa? Is it different from other countries on the African continent?
【GIDEON】: The South African metal community is very passionate! Unfortunately many music venues closed down during the pandemic, but the scene is growing again quickly. There is a younger crowd of metalheads emerging, and there are a lot of promising new bands forming.
【RYAN】: Our scene in Cape Town is alive with a lot of great bands and fans. We do struggle being so far geographically from the rest of the world, so touring is not easy. But I regularly go out to watch local bands because we’ve got some real quality live acts across the metal spectrum. If you’re interested in hearing more you can search South African Metal playlists on Spotify. For metal across the African continent I recommend a great page simply called African Metal.
Q2: 南アフリカのメタル・シーンはどのような状況ですか？アフリカ大陸の他の国とは違いがあるのでしょうか？
【GIDEON】: 南アフリカのメタル・コミュニティはとても情熱的だよ！残念ながら、パンデミックの間に多くの音楽施設が閉鎖されてしまったけど、シーンは再び急速に成長しているよ。若いメタルヘッズが台頭してきているし、有望な新人バンドもたくさん結成されているね。
【RYAN】: ケープタウンのシーンは、たくさんの素晴らしいバンドとファンで活気に満ちている。他の地域から地理的に離れているから、ツアーは簡単ではないけどね。
でも、定期的に地元のバンドを観に出かけているよ。メタル全般にわたって、本当に質の高いライヴアクトが揃っているからね。もっと聴きたいなら、Spotify で南アフリカのメタル・プレイリストを検索してみるといい。アフリカ大陸のメタルについては、African Metal という素晴らしいページがお勧めだよ。
Q3: Crow Black Sky is a really great name for a band! Why did you choose this name?
【GIDEON】: When we were starting out, there were a few band name ideas floating around. Crow Black Sky was inspired by a line in Cradle of Filth’s “Better To Reign in Hell”, from their iconic Damnation and a Day album which turned 20 this year!
【RYAN】: Yeah, and that song in turn is inspired by a quote from John Milton’s epic poem Paradise Lost. Here’s the verse that inspired our band name:
Burning, like penal fires roused to strain
The jagged-toothed skyline braced with crosses
The golden dawn
Lay lost to mist where
Emboldened thorns
Made their bed with toppled stones
He closed His eyes
Sunken to dream there
Of crow-black skies
And a great white empty throne.
Q3: “Crow Black Sky” というバンド名も本当に素晴らしいですね！なぜこの名前を選んだのですか？
【GIDEON】: バンドを始めた頃、バンド名のアイデアがいくつか浮かんでいたんだ。”Crow Black Sky” は CRADLE OF FILTH の “Better To Reign in Hell” の一節にインスパイアされたものだよ。彼らの象徴的なアルバム “Damnation and a Day” に収録されている！
【RYAN】: そう、そしてこの曲はジョン・ミルトンの叙事詩 “失楽園” からの引用にインスパイアされているんだ。僕らのバンド名にインスピレーションを与えた一節はこうだ：

Q4: “Sidereal Light: Volume 2” is a really great piece of work! I think this is a sequel to Vol. 1. What is the story behind this series of albums?
【RYAN】: Thanks, we’re really happy to hear the appreciation for it. We were actually going to release what ended up becoming Volume One as a side project originally, and then decided that we’d create this avenue for cosmic stuff within CBS, that we can return to over time. So Sidereal Light is our series of albums that focuses on the cosmos and our place in it, and with overall a more spacey ethereal sound than our other material. Our next album will be different thematically, and we’ll come back to Sidereal Light for a third volume sometime in the future.
Q4: “Sidereal Light: Volume 2” は本当に素晴らしい作品ですね！Vol.1の続編だと思いますが、この一連のアルバムにはどんなストーリーがあるのですか？
【RYAN】: ありがとう、評価してもらえて本当にうれしいよ。もともとはサイド・プロジェクトとして “Vol.1” をリリースする予定だったんだけど、CROW BLACK SKY の中に宇宙的なテーマへの道を作ろうと決めたんだ。
“Sidereal Light” とは、宇宙とその中での僕たちの位置に焦点を当てた一連のアルバムで、他の作品よりも全体的に宇宙的でエセリアルなサウンドになっている。次のアルバムはテーマ的に違うものになるだろうが、いつか第3弾として “Sidereal Light” に戻ることにもなるだろう。
Q5: Interestingly, your music is black metal, but very uplifting and fantastic! It reminds me of a sci-fi blockbuster or a classic fantasy game. Japan is a mecca for fantasy, including anime and video games. Is there any Japanese content that has influenced you?
【GIDEON】: Thank you! Sure, I spent a lot of time playing games like Golden Sun and FF7. Some of my other favourite game soundtracks are in old classics like Diablo 2 and Starcraft.
【RYAN】: I’ve watched so much great Japanese media and cinema that’s definitely been a part of inspiring me over the course of my life, even if not actively on this album. In terms of Japanese music I listen to, Sigh has made some of the best avant-garde black metal albums, and there are many fantastic Japanese metal bands; last year’s album by Imperial Circus Dead Decadence is crazy. Outside of metal, Mono is very special to me, particularly Hymn to the Immortal Wind. But currently the biggest Japanese influence in my life is Ghost of Tsushima which I’m in the middle of playing. Really nice game. I hope to come visit Japan soon!

【GIDEON】: ありがとう！確かに、”黄金の太陽” や “FF7” のような日本ゲームはよくプレイしたものだよ。他に好きなゲームのサウンドトラックは、 “ディアブロ2” や “スタークラフト” のような古い名作のものだね。
【RYAN】: このアルバムに積極的に影響しているわけではないにしろ、僕は日本の素晴らしいメディアや映画をたくさん見てきた。僕が聴く日本の音楽では、SIGH が最高の前衛ブラックメタルのアルバムをいくつか作っているし、素晴らしい日本のメタルバンドはたくさんある。去年の、IMPERIAL CIRCUS DEAD DECADENCE はぶっ飛んでいたよね！

Q6: Musically, your sound blends styles that incorporate progressive movements along with classical, atmospheric, and acoustic elements. It’s great that it’s sometimes brutal, yet melodically accessible, but is the black metal genre still important to you guys?
【RYAN】: We will definitely create more “black” black metal again in the future, but for now we wanted to create a sound that is brighter and celebrates the majesty of the cosmos. In Sidereal Light the spectrum of black to bright is exemplified at the extremes with ‘Lightless, Lightless’ from Volume One on the dark end, and ‘The Blinding Might of Creation’ from Volume Two on the bright end. But I am always looking for new black metal, there’s a lot of good stuff coming out in the past few years. Recently I’ve been listening to Sinmara, Akhlys, The Ruins of Beverast, Spectral Wound, Thantifaxath, and Woe.
Q6: 音楽的に、あなたのサウンドはプログレッシブ・ムーブメントを取り入れたスタイルと、クラシック、アトモスフェリック、アコースティックな要素が融合しています。時にブルータルでありながら、メロディアスで親しみやすく実に印象的です。ただ、ブラックメタルというジャンルは今でもあなたたちにとって重要なのでしょうか？

Q7: In the 2020s, the world was overshadowed by a darker shadow of pandemics, wars, and divisions. I feel that your black metal has become a place of hope and escape from reality in such a world. Did these changes in the world influence your album?
【GIDEON】: To some extent, yes. That along with our life experiences and musical influences all find its way into the music. The creative process is cathartic, and can be a place of hope and escape for us too.
Q7: 2020年代に入って特に、世界はパンデミック、戦争、分断という暗い影に覆われました。あなた方のブラックメタルは、そのような世界において希望と現実逃避の場となったように感じます。こうした世界の変化は、作風の変化と関連しているのでしょうか？
【GIDEON】: ある程度はそうだね。僕たちの人生経験や音楽的な影響とともに、そのすべてが音楽に反映されている。創造的なプロセスはカタルシスであり、僕たちにとっても希望と逃避の場所になり得るんだ。
Q8: Speaking of division, South Africa once had an apartheid policy. Do you think music can eliminate such division and discrimination and change the world?
【RYAN】: We sadly still have a very divided country, and a lot of problems that we live with, but we have just proven during the rugby world cup how the whole country can pull together in unity. Music can have the same effect, maybe not yet on the same scale as sport in South Africa, but hopefully someday.
Q8: 分断といえば、かつて南アフリカにはアパルトヘイト政策が存在しました。音楽はそうした分断や差別をなくし、世界を変えることができると思いますか？
