【POST-DJENT】

“Cyclamen boasts a repertoire featuring both mathcore chaos and technical aggression to the seemingly polar opposite with post-rock atmospheres and calming beauty in a genre I like to call post-djent.”                                                            heavyblogisheavy

【ABOUT VERSE VICA】

Q1: This is your debut album. So, please introduce yourself (With origin of band name Verse Vica).

【PAUL MEISNER】(guitar): Hello, we’re a progressive metal band from Asheville, NC. We play mainly a blend of modern progressive metal and post-rock, with a few other things thrown in here and there. Our band name ‘Verse Vica’ comes from us taking the meaning of the term ‘Vice Versa’ and applying it to the phrase itself. There’s honestly not much of a deeper meaning beyond that it’s just a fun play on words.

Q2: We want to know your musical upbringing, So please talk about it

【PAUL】: I’ve never taken music lessons or anything like that, but I grew up with my father and older brother playing guitar, so I picked up some stuff from them. I’ve been playing guitar in bands around here for 8 years, so through that time of just messing around and figuring stuff out, I grew to enjoy writing and playing more progressive styles of music.

Q3: I’m so surprised and impressed. Because you have both Djent/Prog metal and Post-rock aspects. And It’s very natural. Is that kind of music your ideal?

【PAUL】: Thank you, that’s a huge compliment! Ideally, we strive to write music that most importantly is accessible and catchy, but still technical and fun to play. If you listen close and pay attention, you’ll hear a lot of unconventional time signatures and polymeters that might not be obvious the first time you listen.

Q4: What do Between the buried and me, Animals as Leaders, Hammock, If These Trees Could Talk, mean to you?

【PAUL】: They are some of my biggest musical influences, even though each of those 4 bands sound very different from each other. Taking aspects from different music like this and blending it together is very fun and challenging.

Q4: Between the buried and me, Animals as Leaders, Hammock, If These Trees Could Talk

【ABOUT ENDEAVOR】

Q1: Please talk about your debut album ‘Endeavor’. (Album title, How long, favorite song, Producer, and more)

【PAUL】: ‘Endeavor’ represents everything we love about modern progressive metal. Our goal when writing the album was to have it be a single cohesive and unbroken piece of music, yet still allow each song to retain their own unique identity. Whether someone wants to listen to it all at once, or if they want to break it up instead, each will be a different experience. Either way, we really hope people enjoy the record and we can’t wait to share it with everyone! It’s 41 minutes long, and we recorded all the music at my studio, and then we sent it off to producer Jamie King for mastering. I can’t say I really have a favorite track right now, I love them all!

Q2: Do you use programing drums in this album?

【PAUL】: While we had a drummer in the band while we were writing most of the music, we parted ways with our drummer before we had a chance to record everything. After we spent some time trying to find a new drummer and nothing worked out, instead of waiting around we decided to program the drums for the album and go on with the release process. We are hoping to find a new drummer soon though, so we can begin to play out live!

Q3: Do you use Japanese for title of song, like Dojin,Marumari? Why?

【PAUL】: Yeah, our song names are based off of video games, many of which come from Japan. Marumari is a reference to Metroid and Djinn is a reference to Golden Sun, some of our favorite video games.

Q4: Would you tell us guitar equipment?

【PAUL】: My guitar is an ESP LTD AX-400 FM, and I run it from a Fractal Audio Axe-Fx Ultra, to a Carvin power amp, and then our through a Mesa Boogie 4×12 guitar cabinet. Our other guitarist Greg has a similar rig, but his guitar is a Schecter Hellraiser C-7. We wrote this album on 6-string guitars, but since he just switched to a 7-string that opens up a lot of cool possibilities for us in the future.

【MESSAGE FOR JAPAN】

Q: Do you like MONO? And do you know other Japanese bands? Message for Japanese fans!!

【PAUL】: Yes, MONO are one of my favorite post-rock bands, and they just announced that they’re about to release 2 albums soon so I’m really excited. I love how they blend in classical elements and put so much emotion in their music. Some other great Japanese bands are the metal band Cyclamen and the math-rock band Toe. They are really fun and creative, and big influences as well.
