Melodic Hard Super-Stars, W.E.T. Has Just Released Definitely One Of The Best Record In The Genre “Earthrage” !! Are You Ready For “Burn” And “Watch Their Fire” ?

DISC REVIEW “EARTHRAGE”

WORK OF ART, ECLIPSE, TALISMAN。
WORK OF ART と ECLIPSE。

INTERVIEW WITH ROBERT SÄLL

robert sall 001 240516-2

Q1: This is our first interview with you. So, at first, could you tell us about you and W.E.T itself? What kind of music did you listen to, when you were growing up?

【ROBERT】: I grew up in Stockholm, Sweden, during the 80ies and fell in love with music pretty early. At that time melodic rock/AOR was very popular and I became an instant fan of this type of music. My first favorite band where Kiss, Bon Jovi and Van Halen. But at the same time my older brother fed me with more pop/prog stuff like Prince, Genesis, Level 42 etc so it was really a mix bag of musical styles I grew up with. Then, later on I discovered Toto which introduced me to the whole L.A. scene and all the great records produced by David Foster & Jay Graydon etc. And that is still today the music I enjoy the most. Once I started high school and got serious about studying music, I was introduced to jazz music by the teachers at school. I spent many years playing jazz, soul and funk as it was the only kind of music that was accepted at school. But I learned so much from it and I’m really glad I spent time learning jazz, even though it’s not the music I prefer to play these days, it gave me a greater understanding of music theory and arranging etc. and that is still very helpful to me. And the good thing about going to high school was meeting the other guys in Work of Art. So, I guess you could say that we studied jazz during the weeks and wrote AOR songs on the weekends in those days. Anyway, fast forward to 2008 when we released our first Work of Art Album. Serafino from Frontiers records took a shine to my song writing and wanted me to be part of a new project which became W.E.T. The original idea was to have me write six songs, Erik write six songs and then have Jeff Scott Soto to sing them. That’s was the basic concept behind W.E.T.. But we took it a bit further and turned it to a real band.

それが W.E.T.

Q2: You’re a guitar player in Work of Art, but in W.E.T. you are credited as a keyboard player, right?

【ROBERT】: Let me start by saying that I’m not a keyboard player but a guitar player. I know this is a bit confusing because of W.E.T. where I’m credited as a keyboard player. The only reason I play keyboards in W.E.T. is because we are three guitars players in W.E.T., Erik, Magnus and myself .And someone had do play keyboards for the live shows. So the other guys said ”It will have to be you Robert because you are the only one who at least knows how to turn on a keyboard”. hahaha So, all of the sudden, I was a ”keyboard player”. But I know the basics of how a to play piano/keyboards and the W.E.T. songs a really easy to play. Anyone with a little bit of piano training could do it. For me it’s not really playing, it’s more about pressing down the right keys at the right time. At least, that’s how playing keyboards live with W.E.T. feels. But in the studio, I do a lot of keyboards on my own songs for Work of Art and any other song writing I’ve done for other artists. And Erik have heard those keyboards and wanted me to do more keyboards for W.E.T. as well. But having said that, on the W.E.T. records it’s both me and Erik doing keyboards.

Q2: WORK OF ART でのあなたはギタープレイヤーですが、W.E.T.

確かに W.E.T.
僕が W.E.T.
少なくとも W.E.T.
ただ、W.E.T.

Q3: It’s not big secret that W.E.T is melodic hardrock supergroup From W (Work of Art), E (Eclipse), and T (Talisman). But how did the “Big Three” come to be? Have you known them each other before starting W.E.T.?

【ROBERT】: Erik, Magnus and I went to school together for a year (that’s when Magnus and Erik formed Eclipse) and me and Erik often talked about writing songs together. So when Frontiers approached us both about W.E.T. we both felt, great, this is the perfect situation that we have been waiting for to work together. And then to have Jeff Scott Soto, who we didn’t know but was such a hero to both of us, to sings those songs was like a dream come true!!!

Jeff Scott Soto

Q4: So, let’s talk about your newest record “Earthrage”. You know, definitely it’s melodic hard masterpiece in the decade. Actually, Frontiers’s label owner Serafino Perugino said “by far one of the best records in Frontiers’s history.”. Have you expected such a great reactions?

【ROBERT】: Well, to be honest, I kind of expected it would be a success as both Erik and Jeff is such stars in this genre. And based on the songs and the performances on this record, I don’t think any fans of Jeff or Erik will be let down.

Q5: Five years have passed since you released previous record “Rise Up”. Off course, it’s natural because all members have other bands and projects. But How did the writing, recording process change? Did you three get together in the creative process?

【ROBERT】: The first two records was very much a collaborative song writing effort from Erik and me whereas this record, I didn’t get involved in the song writing process at all. But instead, Jeff has been involved and written lyrics for a bunch of the songs. So that’s a change but I think it’s a good one because I think the key to W.E.T.’s success is Eriks songwriting style and Jeff’s voice. They have a lot in common musically, Erik grew up listing to Swedish bands like, Europe, Talisman and Yngwie Mamsteen and we all know how involved Jeff has been in that scene.

なぜなら、W.E.T.

Q6: I really love “Earthrage” because I feel it’s a little bit far from metal realm compared with your previous two records. I mean, this record has definitely more early 80’s organic vibes like Foreigner, Queen, Boston, Asia, Toto. I’m not saying because of “Urgent”, haha. Do you agree that?

【ROBERT】: I know that we said going in to making Rise Up, that we wanted it to be a bit more heavy than our debut record which had a bit more ”fluffy” feeling. So with Earthrage, I remember discussing this with Erik and we felt it was time to go back to a bit more ”fluffy” style so we wouldn’t be making a ”Rise Up part two”. I think ”Earthrage” is somewhere in middle of the first two records, at least that’s how it feels to me.

Q7: Actually, melodic hardrock is not popular genre like 80’s. Do you think it’s possible to make “melodic hardrock” great again?

【ROBERT】: No not really. But I think thanks to the internet, nowadays, it’s easier to for people to discover the genre and I think it really has helped keeping it alive. But for it to be back on the top lists again, no I don’t think so and that’s fine by me.

Q8: So, we can’t wait next Work of Art’s record. Is there any plan to release?

【ROBERT】: I’m writing the new album right now and we will finish it in September this year. So I guess it will be released probably sometime late 2018 or early 2019. Whenever Frontiers feels the timing is right!

Q8: WORK OF ART
