NEW DISC REVIEW + INTERVIEW 【ORANSSI PAZUZU : MESTARIN KYNSI】

EXCLUSIVE: INTERVIEW WITH ONTTO & EVILL OF ORANSSI PAZUZU !!

“When I Say Progressive, I Mean That In The Literal Sense, Thinking About Music That Has The Idea Of Exploration At Heart. We Are Not Doing a Prog Tribute. Not Following Anyone Else’s Path, But Making Your Own Path.”

DISC REVIEW “MESTARIN KYNSI”

「ORANSSI PAZUZU

ORANSSI PAZUZU “MESTARIN KYNSI” : 10/10

INTERVIEW WITH ONTTO & EVILL

Q1: . First of all, it’s really hard time now due to corona virus, especially musical industry. As a musician, and as a person, how do you spend your corona crisis days?

【EVILL】: As persons we’ve been taking this whole thing seriously carrying out social distancing. As a musician there’s always stuff to do – especially now due to release of the album. It helps to look at it as an opportunity to come up with imaginative ways of doing things. Also this has been a good reminder for anyone that a musician and a person are the same thing and have common human limitations.

【ONTTO】: Since there is not any touring with the new album going on right now, I’m mostly spending my days with my family, working from home. It’s a bit claustrophobic but it’s also nice to get to spend more time with my one-year-old daughter. Overall the situation in Finland is much better than in some other countries. The band is taking a hit from this, of course. One positive thing though: we are trying to ease the pain of not being able to play live by doing a one-off internet stream show on the Friday 15th of May, so you might want to check that out! It will be available free.

Q2: This is the first interview with you. So, at first could you tell us about your band and yourself? Lot’s of fans are really interested in the origin of your incredible eclectic music. What kind of music were you listening to, when you were growing up?

【EVILL】: We’re five people with more or less five different tastes in music. We’re all researchers. I’m personally the least metal oriented person in the group as I have grown up mostly listening to tracker music (techno, jazz, electric etc) and film scores. I tend to think of ourselves as five musicians constantly searching for a common ground of interests. The result – the music that we play – is the leader. Around it is us figuring out how to serve the center of the mass.

【ONTTO】: Yeah, we all have pretty diverse tastes in music. I was a nineties kid, so I grew up listening to all those alternative and indie rock bands that were going on at that time. Later I got heavily into Black Metal and some more experimental stuff like Boredoms or Scott Walker. I also took a deep dive into 70’s progressive rock at some point in my twenties. Nowdays I listen to whatever feels fresh or exciting, regardless of genre.

Q3: How did Oranssi Pazuzu come together? We are really interested in the meaning of your mysterious band name. What made you name your band Oranssi Pazuzu?

【ONTTO】: We were friends already, so we knew each other well and I had also played with everyone in the first lineup in some other groups before. So when we were forming the band, it was an easy call to choose who to ask. Everyone was in right away. Although Moit had broken his arm just before the first jam session. He had a plastered hand and he was playing synthesizer with one hand, instead of guitar. That was a pretty funny first gathering, but we had instantly good chemistry between us. We chose this name to represent the dualistic nature of our music. We wanted to incorporate psychedelic sounds and 70’s style jammy krautrock explorations to black metal. In my thinking the colour oranssi has a taste of cosmic energy to it, as opposed to black, that is so commonly used by metal bands. Pazuzu we chose to represent the dark side.

ORANSSI PAZUZU

Q4: OK, let’s talk about newest record “Mestarin Kynsi”. Actually, from the album and song titles, I imagine there are some religious themes in this record. Do you agree that?

【ONTTO】: It is true in a way. It’s a loose theme album lyrically, about a cult leader, who is using occult religion to hypnotize masses. The opening song sees him rise from a swamp. In the closing song he takes you to the endless white light. I think the religious imagery fitted nicely to our idea that the sounds would be controlling the listener also.

Q5: I haven’t heard such a eclectic record in my life. If I compare, it’s like mixing of whole rock/metal history in one record. What’s your perspective about the opinion?

【ONTTO】: Yeah there definitely are a lot of different things going on in there. However, the idea is not to stuff as many influences in there as possible, but since all of the band members are into various kinds of music and art generally, it is natural that the music also has varied influences. We don’t see reason to be too careful about it. Paint it with a big brush, just throw in there anything we like. But only if it fits the song. Atmosphere comes first, and our purpose is to serve that. We think of genres mostly just as sound examples that we can manipulate into a desired direction.

Q6: Compared your previous works, definitely there is more experiment with synthesizers and electronic stuff in this record, and that makes this record more cinematic, right? Also, Japan is big video game country. Is there any influence from game soundtracks?

【EVILL】: I agree that it’s more cinematic in many ways. The focus being more in synthesizers is one thing. Also we were going for a more intense presence with the whole structure.
Game soundtracks definitely have their place in influences. We communicate a lot by visualizing landscapes and events. Sometimes we even refer to specific momentums of a game. Personally one of my first big idols was Nobuo Uematsu composing Final Fantasy saga. I still find myself being influenced by his brilliant approanching with harmonics and emotions. For that matter FFVII is where my sense of epicness was pretty much born.

Q7: Regarding cinema and it’s soundtrack, your music sometimes reminds me Pink Floyd, Magma, Can, Univers Zero, and 70’s psychedelic prog. Do you think you are “prog” band to some extent?

【ONTTO】: Yes. I’m pretty sure we are philosophically more close to the progressive bands you mentioned, than to most metal bands. Although there are many good bands that do both. When I say progressive, I mean that in the literal sense, thinking about music that has the idea of exploration at heart. We are not doing a prog tribute. Not following anyone else’s path, but making your own path. So for us it is not about being true to any genre, but rather travelling through the genres and into a new sonic dimension. I’m pretty sure those bands had similar ideas in their time and I admire the creativeness they had, and in some cases they still have.

Q8: I really love Waste Of Space Orchestra. That was collaboration with Dark Buddha Rising. Musically, what’s the difference with Oranssi Pazuzu for you? Is there any possibility to continue that project?

【ONTTO】: That is cool to hear. We put so much effort into that, and the whole experience was a very special thing for us. WOSO is a different beast, just because the sheer amount of noise and multiple musicians alone is something that we cannot match with just the five of us. In a way the new album is a reaction to that experience. I think of it as a mothership, that is huge but it turns a bit slow. With Oranssi Pazuzu we are able to make things maybe more flexible and maintain a different focus on certain atmospheric things, while with WOSO there it is this huge wall of sound. I hope that at some point we could do another album, but right now both bands are focusing on their own music.

WASTE OF SPACE ORCHESTRA
