DISC REVIEW “WHERE ONLY GODS MAY TREAD”
「今の UK シーンには本当に才能があって努力しているバンドがたくさんいるからね。英国において問題だったのは、INGESTED が始まった頃にいたバンドの多くが、メタルがそれほど人気がなかった悪い時代を乗り越えようと頑張らなかったことなんだ。」
LOATHE, VENOM PRISON, EMPLOYED TO SERVE, SVALBARD。2020年。デスメタルの強烈なカムバックを支え、デスコアの鋭き毒牙を研ぎ澄ますのは、疑問の余地もなく英国の若武者たちです。そうして様々な手法で音楽のリミットを解除し、境界線を排除する重音革命を最前線で牽引するのが INGESTED だと言えるでしょう。
「”デスコア” でも “スラム” でも何でもいいんだけど、僕たちはもう自分たちを狭いジャンルに押し込めたいとは思わないんだ。ただ、僕たちのアルバムがデスメタルのジャンルの多さを物語っているのは間違いないと思う。このアルバムにあるのはどんなエクストリームメタルのファンでも何かしら愛せる部分を見つけられる影響ばかりなんだから。」
たしかに、かつて “UK のスラムキング” と謳われた4銃士がここ数年で遂げたメタモルフォーゼの華麗さには、眼を見張るものがありました。特に、アトモスフィア、ブラッケンド、そしてメロディーのロマンチシズムを吸収したEP “Call of the Void” には次なる傑作の予感が存分に封じられていたのです。
「子供時代は完全に SLIPKNOT キッズだったんだ。”Iowa” は僕の時代で、僕の子供時代全てなんだ。FEAR FACTORY や LAMB OF GOD, PANTERA, CHIMAIRA なんかが大好きだったけど、中でも SLIPKNOT は僕の人生を変えてくれたバンドで、”Iowa” を聴いてからずっとメタルバンドになりたいと思っていたのさ。」
完成した最新作 “Where Only Gods May Tread” は予感通り、メタル世界の誰もが認めざるを得ない凄みを放っています。結局、INGESTED がメタルに再び人気を取り戻し進化へ導くための努力、多様性の実現、言いかえれば彼らの底なしの野心は、自らの心臓が送り出す凶暴な血潮をより赤々と彩るドーピングの素材にしかすぎませんでした。まさに摂取。まさに消費。真実は、根幹である暴力と狂気に対する圧倒的心酔、ルーツへの忠誠こそ、バンドの信頼性を極限まで高めているのです。
実際、オープナー “Follow the Deciever” からその無慈悲な残虐性はなんの躊躇いもなくリスナーへと襲い掛かります。ただし、INGESTED の拷問方法、地獄の責め苦は非常に多岐に渡り周到。知性際立つグルーヴの氾濫、唸り吸い叫ぶ声色の脅威、アコースティックやオリエンタルで演出するダイナミズムの落とし穴。つまりリスナーは、全身に猛攻を浴びながらも、常に新たな被虐の快楽に身を委ねることができるのです。
それでも、CROWBER/DOWN の Kirk Windstein が歌心の結晶を届ける “Another Breath” に対流するメロディーのきらめきは INGESTED にとって新たな出発点の一つでしょうし、なによりプログレッシヴで紆余曲折に満ち、ビートダウンの猛攻が蠢く過去とより思慮深くメロディックにアトモスフェリックに翼を広げる未来とのギャップを見事に埋める9分のエピック “Leap of the Faithless” はモダンメタルの可能性を完璧なまでに証明する一曲となりました。
今回弊誌では、七色のボーカル Jason Evans にインタビューを行うことが出来ました。「僕たちは、音楽であれ、メディアであれ、映画であれ、人生経験であれ、周りのあらゆるものに影響を受けているよね。これらのものは、人としての自分、バンドとしての僕ら、そして自分たちが作る音楽そのものを形作っているんだ。だけど、これらのものはまず消費されなければならなくて、”摂取” されなければならないんだよ。」 どうぞ！！

INTERVIEW WITH JASON EVANS
Q1: It’s really hard time now due to corona virus, especially the musical industry. And recently, BLM movement is spreading from the US to the world. There’s also the issue of brexit in the UK, right? What’s your thoughts on the current UK or global situation?
【JASON】: 2020 has been a bit of a crazy year so far hasn’t it? Obviously COVID-19 has affected everyone this year, but we’re trying to take a positive from this negative. We’ve used this downtime to promote our new album and be more active on our social medias (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter). We’ve also been uploading song playthroughs to our YouTube, and I’ve started a Twitch channel. So even though we’ve been unable to tour, we’ve been able to connect with our fans on a level that we probably wouldn’t have if we were on the road. You’ve got to try and look for those silver linings, you know? The BLM movement has been very important this year too, I just think it’s sad that in this day and age it takes another tragedy to cast light on something that quite frankly, shouldn’t be happening in the first place.
Q1: コロナ危機から Black Lives Matter と世界は激動の時を迎えています。UK にはブレグジットの問題も存在しますよね？
【JASON】: 2020年はこれまでのところ、少しクレイジーな年だったんじゃないかな？ COVID-19は明らかに今年みんなに影響を与えたけど、僕らはこのネガティブな状況からなんとかポジティブになろうとしているんだ。
つまりこの休止期間をニューアルバムのプロモーションや、SNS での活動に費やしているんだよ。それに、YouTube に楽曲のプレイスルーをアップロードしたり、Twitchのチャンネルを立ち上げたりもしている。
だから、残念ながらツアーができなくても、逆にツアー中であればおそらくできないレベルでファンとつながることができたんだ。そういった希望の兆しを探してみるべきだよね。
BLM運動は今年も非常に重要であり続けている。もう2020年だよ。今の時代に、そもそも起こるべきじゃないことに光を当てるため、また別の悲劇が必要なのは率直に言って悲しいことだと思う。
Q2: This is the first interview with you. So, at first, could you tell us about the band and yourself? What kind music were you listening to, when you were growing up?
【JASON】: So Sean and Sam (guitars) have known each other since they were kids, I met them when I was 17 years old and we formed a band called Age Of Suffering. We recorded a couple of demos and played a few local shows, then in 2006 we met Lyn (drums), scrapped our old songs and became Ingested. With Lyn onboard we could now truly spread our wings and become the band we were meant to be. Growing up I was a total Slipknot kid, “Iowa” is my era. That album is my childhood. I loved Fear Factory and Lamb Of God, Pantera, Chimaira, honestly I could go on all day, but Slipknot were the band that changed my life, and ever since hearing them all I’ve ever wanted to do is be in a metal band.
Q2: 弊誌初登場です。まずはあなたの音楽的バックグラウンドからお話ししていただけますか？
【JASON】: Sean と Sam (ギター)は子供の頃からの付き合いで、僕は17歳の時に彼らと出会い、AGE OF SUFFERING というバンドを結成したんだ。いくつかデモをレコーディングして地元で数回ショーをやったんだけど、2006年に Lyn (ドラム)と出会って、古い曲をスクラップにして INGESTED を結成したんだ。Lynが加入してくれたことで、僕らは本当に翼を広げて、成りたかったバンドになることができたんだ。

Q3: How did Ingested come to be? What’s the story behind your band name Ingested?
【JASON】: When we decided we were going to change our name, we did it because we wanted one memorable word, something simple but something with bite. The word “Ingested” means “to consume”. We are influenced by everything around us, be it music, the media, movies, or our own life experiences. These things shape who we are as people, as a band, and the very music we make. But these things must first be consumed, they must be “Ingested.”
Q3: INGESTED というバンド名に変更したのはなぜだったんですか？
【JASON】: 名前を変えようと決めた時に欲しかったのは覚えやすい言葉だってね。シンプルでありながらも噛みごたえのある言葉。”Ingested “という言葉は “消費する” という意味なんだ。
僕たちは、音楽であれ、メディアであれ、映画であれ、人生経験であれ、周りのあらゆるものに影響を受けているよね。これらのものは、人としての自分、バンドとしての僕ら、そして自分たちが作る音楽そのものを形作っているんだ。だけど、これらのものはまず消費されなければならなくて、”摂取” されなければならないんだよ。
Q4: UK metal scene is making a strong comeback now. And you are definitely a front runner of new wave of UK extreme music as well as Loathe, Employed to Serve, and Venom Prison. Why do you think UK metal is making a comeback now?
【JASON】: I think it’s down to the sheer amount of truly talented, hard working bands in the UK scene at the moment. The problem before is that a lot of the bands that were around when Ingested started just didn’t stick it out through the bad times, the years when metal wasn’t quite as popular. It’s nice to see the scene flourishing again, when the UK metal scene is in full swing, it’s one of the best in the world.
Q4: UK のメタルシーンは強烈なカムバックを遂げていますよね。あなた達は、LOATHE, EMPLOYED TO SERVE, VENOM PRISON といったバンドと並んで、そんなシーンを牽引する存在です。
【JASON】: 今の UK シーンには本当に才能があって努力しているバンドがたくさんいるからね。英国において問題だったのは、INGESTED が始まった頃にいたバンドの多くが、メタルがそれほど人気がなかった悪い時代を乗り越えようと頑張らなかったことなんだ。
メタルシーンが再び盛り上がっているのを見るのは嬉しいことだよ。その UK がその起爆剤となっていることもね。世界で最高のシーンの一つさ。
Q5: OK, let’s talk about your newest record “Where Only Gods May Tread”. Are there any concepts or lyrical themes in this record?
【JASON】: Our lyrical concepts vary, but most of them are drawn from our own personal feelings or life experiences. We keep our lyrics vague so the listener can draw their own conclusion as to what the song is about. We are of the mind that if you listen to an Ingested song and can relate to the lyrics and feel as though it applies to something that you have experienced or something that may be going on in your life, then that’s far more powerful than any explanation we could offer. If you can relate to a song, you get that connection with the band, and if our music can help anyone having a rough time, then that’s real power right there.
Q5: では最新作 “Where Only Gods May Tread” について話しましょう。まずはレコードのコンセプト、歌詞のテーマから伺いたいのですが。
【JASON】: 僕たちの歌詞のコンセプトは様々だけど、そのほとんどは自身の個人的な感情や人生経験から導き出されたものなんだ。ただ僕たちは、リスナーがその曲が何についてのものなのか自分なりの結論を導き出せるように、歌詞を曖昧にしているからね。
もし INGESTED の曲を聴いて、歌詞に共感し、君が経験したことや、人生で起こっていることに当てはまると感じられるなら、それは僕たちのどんな説明よりもはるかに強力なものになると考えているよ。
リスナーが曲に共感し、バンドとのつながりを得ることができるとしたら、そうして僕たちの音楽が辛い時を過ごしている人を助けることができるとしたら、それこそが音楽に宿る真の力なんだと思う。
Q6: It’s great that this one evokes death metal/deathcore legends like Dying Fetus, Suffocation, and Decapitated while still asserting its own unique sound. Especially, 9 minutes epic “Leap of the Faithless” is a perfect example of Ingested. Is it an evolved deathcore in a way?
【JASON】: “Deathcore”, “Slam”, call it whatever you want, we don’t really pigeonhole ourselves anymore, it all comes under the umbrella of “Death Metal”. I think you could make an argument for any of our albums being a multitude of Death Metal genres. We’ve spent the last 14 years honing our Death Metal skills, every album adding new elements until now we stand before you with “Where Only Gods May Tread”, there’s so many different influences on this album that we’re certain fans of any form of extreme metal will find something to love.
Q6: “Where Only Gods May Tread” は DYING FETUS, SUFFOCATION, DECAPITATED といったレジェンドの面影を想起させながら、9分のエピック “Leap of the Faithless” のようにしっかりと自らのユニークポイントを打ち出し、遺産を進化させていますよね？
【JASON】: “デスコア” でも “スラム” でも何でもいいんだけど、僕たちはもう自分たちを狭いジャンルに押し込めたいとは思わないんだ。ただ、僕たちのアルバムがデスメタルのジャンルの多さを物語っているのは間違いないと思う。
なんと言っても過去14年間、デスメタルの技術を磨くのに費やしてきたし、ここに到達するまでアルバムごとに新しい要素を加えてきたからね。
だけど、このアルバムにあるのはどんなエクストリームメタルのファンでも何かしら愛せる部分を見つけられる影響ばかりなのさ。
Q7: There are couple of incredible guest appearances, Vincent Bennett from The Acacia Strain, Matt Honeycutt from Kublai Khan, and Kirk Windstein from Crowbar. What do they bring to your work?
【JASON】: We decided to approach the guest appearances differently for this album. We think that all too often these days if a metal band has a guest feature, they turn up for about 30 seconds towards the end of the song and that’s it. That’s not a guest appearance, that’s an advert. So with our guest appearances we wanted them to be an organic part of the song. With “Black Pill” and “The Burden of Our Failures”, Matt and Vince and with you from the beginning of their respective songs until the end. They’re taking this journey with us, and you the listener. These songs were picked specifically for each guest. In the case of “Another Breath”, that song was written with Kirk Windstein in mind, and his appearance in the main hook is so perfect and haunting, they all nailed it.
Q7: THE ACACIA STRAIN の Vincent, KUBILAI KHAN の Matt, CROWBAR の Kirk と非常に豪華なゲストも揃いました。
【JASON】: 今回のアルバムでは、ゲスト出演に対するアプローチを変えてみることにしたんだ。最近メタルバンドがゲストを招く場合、曲の最後に30秒ほど登場して、それだけで終わってしまうことが多いと思うんだけど、それではゲスト出演ではなく宣伝になってしまう。だから、彼らが曲の中の有機的な部分で躍動するようにしたかったんだ。
“Black Pill” と “The Burden of Our Failures” では、Matt と Vincent が、それぞれの曲の最初から最後まで登場しているよ。彼らは僕たちとリスナーと一緒にこの旅をしっかり経験している。楽曲もそれぞれのゲストのために特別に選んだからね。
“Another Breath” の場合、この曲は Kirk を意識して書かれたもので、メインフックの彼の登場はとても完璧で心に響くものがあるよね。全員が最高の仕事をしてくれたよ。
Q8: There’s a lot of criticism about deathcore and metalcore – that it’s in a rut, that the scene is saturated, that it all sounds the same, right? What do you think about that criticism?
【JASON】: I think some of it is unwarranted, but some of it is fair too. With anything that gets popular, people are gonna want to do it themselves, and that’s all good and well but that does create over saturation. The one thing that I have noticed is a lot of vocalists now sound incredibly similar, there’s not a lot of character or distinction anymore, which I do think is a contributing factor. But the truth is Death Metal is on the rise again, over saturated or not, and that can only be a good thing.
Q8: デスコアやメタルコアにかんしては、全部同じように聴こえるとか、シーンが飽和しているといった批判もありますよね？
【JASON】: その批判は不当なものもあると思うけど、公平なものもあるだろうね。なんでもそうだけど、人気が出ればやりたいと思う人は増えるだろうし、それは良いことだけど、シーンが飽和しすぎてしまうこともあるよね。
一つ気付いたのは、多くのボーカリストが信じられないほど似たような音になってしまったことなんだ。そうやってユニークなキャラクターを産んだりや差別化ができていないのも一因だとは思うんだ。
でも実際のところ、デスメタルは飽和しすぎていようがいまいが、再び台頭してきているんだ。それは良いことだよね。
