オーストラリアが産んだ新世代メタルコアのホープ、NORTHLANE が新作 “NODE” をリリースしました。昨今、オージーメタルコア勢の進境は著しく PARKWAY DRIVE, THY ART IS MURDER, I KILL THE PROM QUEEN, IN HEARTS WAKE, AMITTY AFFLICTION, STORM THE SKY と世界的に人気、名声を得て大きなムーブメントとなっています。その中でも NORTHLANE はプログレッシブな展開、アトモスフェリックな美意識を併せ持つブライテストホープと言えるでしょう。新作 “NODE” は名作との声も多かった前作 “SINGULARITY” を遥かに凌駕し、バンドの成長と新たなるチャプターの幕開けを告げています。昨年、前任ボーカルの ADRIAN FITIPALDES が脱退。彼の持つカリスマ性故、バンドの将来が心配されましたが、”NODE” を聴く限りその心配は杞憂だったようです。新加入 MARCUS BRIDGE の実力は前任者と比べても遜色なく、むしろレンジの広さ、クリーンの巧さでは上回っているのではないかと思うほどです。ADRIAN の持っていたブルータリティーは確かに魅力でしたが、MARCUS のより深い感情表現はさらに多くのファンを獲得する強い武器になるでしょう。加えてプロデューサー WILL PUTNEY と再びタッグを組んだことも吉と出ました。MISS MAY I, MISERY SIGNALS, STRAY FROM THE PATH, FOR TODAY, UPON A BURNING BODY などなど次世代メタルコアの大半を手掛けているのではないかと思うほどの実力派人気プロデューサーですが、アトモスフィアとへヴィネスのバランス感覚が素晴らしく流石の手腕を発揮しています。MARCUS のボーカルによってポストハードコア的キャッチーさを以前よりも多く導入し、MONUMENTS が “THE AMANUENSIS” で見せたようなへヴィネスの””質””も変化。さらに大きなバンドになる準備は整いました。今回弊誌ではバンドの創立メンバーでベーシストの ALEX MILOVIC に話が聴けました。

【INTERVIEW WITH ALEX MILOVIC】
Q1: This is our first intervew with you. So, would you tell us how NORTHLANE started and why you named your band as NORTHLANE?
【 ALEX 】: Northlane started in 2008 when myself and Jon were sharing song idea’s together, we then decided to start the band together. we named the band Northlane after one of our favourite bands, as they had a song called North Lane.
Q1: 初インタビューなのでまずは NORTHLANE がどのように始まったのか、バンド名の由来を教えてください。
【 ALEX 】: NORTHLANE は2008年に僕と JOHN が一緒に楽曲のアイデアをシェアしていたのが始まりなんだ。それから僕たちはバンドを始めようと思ったんだよ。NORTHLANE という名前は僕たちの大好きなバンドの楽曲に “NORTH LANE” というのがあったからそれにちなんで名づけたんだ。
Q2: You parted ways with Adrian Fitipaldes. After that, Marcus Bridge join in the band. What caused this change? How’s it going with Marcus in the band?
【ALEX】: Adrian had no longer wanted to play in a band as he was suffering from physical and mental stress. The addition of Marcus in Northlane has been amazing, we were very worried about the future of Northlane when Adrian decided to leave but when we found Marcus we knew he was the right person for our band. .
Q2: 前任ボーカルの ADRIAN FITIPALDES が脱退し、MARCUS BRIDGE が加入しました。何が起こったのですか？また MARCUS がバンドにもたらしたものは何でしょう？
【 ALEX 】: ADRIAN はこれ以上バンドでプレイしたくなかったんだ。肉体的にも精神的にもストレスで苦しんでいたからね。MARCUS が NORTHLANE に加入したことは素晴らしいよ。ADRIAN の脱退が決まったときは心から NORTHLANE の将来を心配したんだけど、MARCUS を見つけた時彼こそがバンドに相応しいと判ったんだ。
Q3: So, your new album “Node” is really great!! I think one of the masterpiece of 21century. When you named new record as “Node”, what was in your mind? Does “Node” have a concept story or lyrical themes?
【 ALEX 】: A node is a point in a network were two lines or pathways intersect. We came across this name because it was the perfect way to describe the event that happened with Northlane. As one member left the band another joined. This is why we called the album “Node” .
Q3: 新作 “NODE” ですが素晴らしい出来ですね！アルバムのコンセプト、歌詞のテーマを教えてください。
【 ALEX 】: NODE とはネットワーク上のポイントで、２つのラインや小道が交わる場所なんだ。NORTHLANE に起こった出来事を完璧に表現していると思ったからこのタイトルに決めたんだよ。メンバーが1人離脱し１人加入した。だから新作を “NODE” と呼んでいるんだ。
Q4: I think Marcus’s voice is much more clean, vivid than Adrian ever was. And entire album is build centering around that. Is this album made with MARCUS in your mind in the writing process earlier?
【 ALEX 】: I dont think musically the album would have been any different if Adrian was in the band but having Marcus, he is an amazing clean singer and Northlane has always had clean singing in our songs before but now we had a whole different palate to work with. Ranging from screaming to singing and everything in between, having Marcus opened doors to different vocal styles that we previously didn’t have .
Q4: MARCUS の声は ADRIAN よりもクリーンで鮮明なイメージがあります。アルバムも彼の声を中心に制作されたのではないでしょうか？作曲過程の早い段階から彼の声を頭に置いていましたか？
【 ALEX 】: 音楽的には ADRIAN がいた頃から何も変わっていないと思うよ。ただ MARCUS が加わったことで、勿論 NORTHLANE は以前からクリーンボイスを使用していた訳だけど、彼は素晴らしいクリーンシンガーだから完全に異なった次元で楽曲を制作できるんだ。スクリームやクリーンのレンジから全てに置いて、マーカスは以前には無かったスタイルをもたらしてくれたよ。
Q5: You are off course one of the brightest New Generation of Metalcore Band. Also, Atomospheric is important word to express your music. In fact, “Node” is the most atmospheric album in your works, I think. How do you keep the balance between heaviness and atmosphere?
【 ALEX 】: I think it all comes back down to feeling, some songs have a more atmospheric feel to them then other songs off Node. It’s not something that we can a guideline for, The songs have there own feel and vibe to it and it just grow’s from there. .
Q5: NORTHLANE はメタルコア新世代のブライテストホープですが、アトモスフェリックという単語はあなた達の音楽を表現する上で重要ですよね？実際 “NODE” は NORTHLANE の作品で最もアトモスフェリックなアルバムだと思います。へヴィネスとアトモスフィアのバランスについてはどのように考えていますか？
【 ALEX 】: 思い返してみれば、”NODE” のいくつかの楽曲よりアトモスフェリックな過去の曲はある訳だよ。別に何かガイドラインを設けている訳じゃなくて、楽曲それ自体が持つ感覚やヴァイブを大事にしているだけなんだ。
Q6: Also, Oddtime signature is important aspect in your music. Do you think you are involved in Djent/Prog scene? And do you have the Djent/Prog bands you have sympathy with?
【 ALEX 】: Most of the songs off Node are actually in 4/4. We dont label or classify ourselves as a djent band but we enjoy listening to music of all different genre’s that include djent and prog bands as well. .
Q6: 変拍子も NORTHLANE の重要な要素の1つだと思いますが、あなた達は DJENT/PROG シーンに関わっていると思っていますか？
【 ALEX 】: 実は “NODE” の楽曲の大半は 4/4 で書かれているんだ。自分たちが DJENT バンドだとは思わないしそうジャンル分けされるとも思わないけど、DJENT や PROG バンドを含めて全ての異なるジャンルを聴くのは好きだし楽しいよね。
Q7: So, out of all “Node” songs, which of them symbolize NORTHLANE now the most?
【 ALEX 】: I’d like to think either Node is a great representation of Northlane 2.0. It has a great mixture of heavy and soft parts as well as harsh and clean vocals. .
Q7: では “NODE” でどの楽曲が NORTHLANE の今を最も現していると思いますか？
【 ALEX 】: 僕は “NODE” のどの楽曲も “NORTHLANE2.0” を実に良く表現していると思っているよ 。ヘヴィーなパートとソフトなパート、荒々しいボーカルとクリーンボイスを上手くミックス出来ていると思うな。
Q8: PARKWAY DRIVE, THY ART IS MURDER, I KILL THE PROMQUEEN, IN, HEARTS WAKE and you…Lot’s of Australian Metalcore bands become popular in worldwide now. What is the characteristics and quality of Australian Metalcore bands?
【 ALEX 】: I think because we are so far away from the rest of the world it pushes Australian bands to work harder and to do something different so that the rest of the world takes notice of what bands in Australia are doing .
Q8: PARKWAY DRIVE, THY ART IS MURDER, I KILL THE PROM QUEEN, IN HEARTS WAKE そして NORTHLANE とオーストラリアのメタルコアバンドは世界的に人気がありますね。
【 ALEX 】: オーストラリアは他の地域からかなり遠い場所にあるからだと思うよ。他の地域のバンドよりハードワークして、何か違うことにトライしなきゃって思うんだろうね。そうしてやっと世界がオーストラリアのバンドがやっていることに気づいてくれるんだ。
