カナダが生んだ、テクニカルデスメタルのレジェンド/オリジネーター CRYPTOPSY が新作EP “The Book of Suffering-Tome 1” をリリースしました！！
結成は1988年、1994年の1stアルバム “Blasphemy Made Flesh” リリースから数えてももう立派な20年選手です。唯一のオリジナルメンバーで、世界最高のテクニックを誇るとも称される Flo Mounier の人間離れしたドラミングを中心として、超絶技巧とブルータリティーをどちらも損なうことなく楽曲に注ぎ込む驚異的なバンドなのです。
メンバーチェンジが多く、今作でも、セルフタイトルの前作 “Cryptopsy” でバンドに復帰し素晴らしい仕事を見せた初期メンバーでリフマイスター Jon Levassur が1作のみで再度脱退しています。2作前の “The Unspoken King” はクリーンボーカルの導入やメタルコア風リフの多用で批判を浴びた作品で、Jon の復帰がバンドを本来有るべき姿に引き戻し “Cryptopsy” を名作にせしめたと感じているファンは、彼が再度脱退したことで不安を感じていたことでしょう。しかし完全にそれは杞憂でした。”The Book of Suffering-Tome 1″ は前作 “Cryptopsy” の路線を引き継ぎさらに凶悪性を強めたような会心のEPに仕上がっています。
今作は “The Book of Suffering” シリーズの1冊目(Tome)という位置づけで、インタビューで判明しましたがトリロジーで完結する予定とのことです。複雑怪奇でブルータリティー溢れる楽曲は彼らの金字塔 “None So Vile” を彷彿とさせます。同時にこの20年で培ったキャッチーさや音楽の素養を惜しみなく詰め込み、非常に濃密な4曲17分間を提供して来ましたね。特に Flo のドラミングには鬼気迫るものがあり、未だに進化を続けているような印象を持ちました。あれだけのテクニック、手数足数を炸裂させながらヘヴィネスを欠片も失っていない点が真の超人たる所以でしょう。

Q1: How was your last gig in Japan, Loud Park 2012? Actually, I saw CRYPTOPSY at that time, and am really impressed by Flo’s Drum technique and tight performance of the band!!
【FLO】: Loud Park was awesome!!
We had a really good time. I had Akito and Hero and more from Pearl Japan helping me out, it was quite an honor.
It’s very simple, every time we come to Japan we have a great time.
Q1: 現時点で最後の来日となっている LOUDPARK 2012はいかがでしたか？あの時見ていたのですが、あなたの驚異的なドラミングとバンドのタイトな演奏には本当に感銘を受けました。
【FLO】: LOUDPARK は最高だったよ！！本当に素晴らしい時間を過ごせたんだ。PEARL JAPAN の Akito と Hero、その他にも大勢が力になってくれてね。とても光栄だったよ。僕達が日本に行く度、素晴らしい時間を過ごせる。シンプルな話だよ。
Q2: Your newest EP “The Book of Suffering-Tome 1” is just out now! How are you feeling now? And how are the reactions so far?
【FLO】: I’m really happy about this release. It’s fresh, dark and of course brutal. Also the songs are fun to play.
The reactions have been very positive and I’m very glad that people are liking it. A lot of good reviews too!
Q2: 新EP “The Book of Suffering-Tome 1″がリリースされましたね！今はどういったお気持ちですか？またこれまでの反響はいかがですか？
【FLO】: リリース出来てとても嬉しいね。フレッシュでダークで、勿論ブルータル。楽曲もプレイしていて楽しいんだ。反響はとてもポジティブで、みんなが気に入ってくれてとても嬉しいね。良いレビューも多いんだよ！
Q3: So, this is the first release of “The Book of Suffering” series. Off course, you could choose making full album, but you decided to release this way, EP series. What made you so? And how many “The Book of Suffering” EP are you planning to release?
【FLO】: We just wanted to put out new stuff. And we figured that 4/5 songs per year is better then 8/9 every 4 years. Cause that was our average lolllll
I believe that this will be a trilogy but not 100% decided on that yet. With the Canadian winter coming soon we plan on writing Tome 2.
Q3: このEPは “The Book of Suffering” シリーズの1作目という位置づけだそうですね。フルアルバムを制作するという選択肢も当然あった訳ですが、なぜこういった形を選んだのですか？また何作ほどリリースする予定なのでしょう？
【FLO】: ただ新しいマテリアルを世に出したかったんだよ。あとは4年で8,9曲よりも、1年で4,5曲の方が良いと考えたんだ。4年で8,9曲作るのが僕達の平均的ペースだからね（笑）この作品はトリロジーになる予定なんだけど、まだ100%は決めていないんだ。カナダの冬がすぐにやってくるから、そうしたら “TomeⅡ”に取り掛かるよ。
Q4: Could you tell us about the concept or story of “The Book of Suffering”? I think “The Book of Suffering” was an original title of your 6th album “The Unspoken King”. Is that right?
【FLO】: Yes, the idea came from my bud Lord Worm. I called him to see about using the name for these EPs and of course he accepted (he’s an awesome guy!)
The first Tome deals with Crazy and Sick Canadian individuals and events, kind of a continuation of the self titled album.
Tome 2 I believe with deal with exceptionally gruesome torture methods and devices.
Q4: “The Book of Suffering”シリーズのコンセプト、ストーリーを教えてください。元々、”The Book of Suffering”とはあなた達の6thアルバム “The Unspoken King” の原題だったように記憶しています。
【FLO】: うん、このアイデアは僕の親友 Lord Worm が思いついたんだよ。今回のEPシリーズにこのタイトルを使って良いか彼に聞いたんだけど、勿論快諾してくれたよ。最高の男だね！最初のトーメ(一冊目)ではシックでクレイジーなカナダ人の個々の人々やイベントについて扱っているよ。セルフタイトルの前作を引き継いでいるような感じだね。Tome 2では非常に陰惨な拷問の方法及び装置について扱う予定なんだ。
Q5: “The Book of Suffering-Tome 1” has only 4 songs 17 minutes, but it’s really brutal, technical, and mind-blowing!! I felt this is CRYPTOPSY, this is the Extreme Technical Death Metal. Your die-hard fans may be satisfy with this record. Off course, you become a little bit more “catchy/melodic” than 1996 (haha), but did you have “None So Vile” era in your mind strongly in the writing process?
【FLO】: Personally I never have the past in my head when I write.
I can’t speak for the other members in the band though.
All our past album have had catchy grooves and melodic parts mixed into ultra brutalness! So that’s what we do, but at the same time we evolve as musicians and use new abilities and sounds to create the freshness and difference.
Q5: “The Book of Suffering” はたった4曲 17分間ですが、非常にテクニカルでブルータル、想像を超えていました。これぞ CRYPTOPSY, これぞテクニカルデスメタルといった感じですね。昔からのファンも納得するのではないでしょうか。勿論、あなた達は当時よりメロディックにはなっていますが（笑）、作曲過程で “None So Vile” 時代を意識しましたか？
【FLO】: 個人的には、作曲段階で過去の自分を意識したことはないね。他のメンバーについてはわからないけど。僕達の過去の作品は全て、キャッチーなグルーヴとメロディーをウルトラブルータルな素材とミックスしているんだよ！だけど同時に、僕達はミュージシャンとして成長しているから、新しい能力やサウンドを使用して新しさや違いを生み出すことが出来ているんだ。
Q6: You marked a return to Technical Death Metal sound in your previous release “Cryptopsy”. I think Jon Levasseur’s return was one of the reason of the change. Do you agree that? This time, Jon left the band again. Did his departure influence on the music of “The Book of Suffering”? Why does CRYPTOPSY has such amount of member changes?haha.
【FLO】: We have always had technical parts and riffing. Jon wanted to come back to write one more album and he did. Some people like creating music, some people like performing music and some people like touring for their music.
Luckily I like it all!!! But not all people do, mixed in with rough conditions, not much $$ and egos some musicians can’t do it for long.
The new one is created by the current line up and that’s it. Our influences are huge, and what you hear is what came out Lolll.
Q6: 前作 “Cryptopsy” では完全にテクニカルデスメタルサウンドに戻りましたね？ギタリスト Jon Levassur の復帰がそのサウンドに影響を与えたように感じました。CRYPTOPSY は非常にメンバーチェンジの多いバンドです。今回、また彼がバンドを離れましたが、それによる影響はありましたか？
【FLO】: 僕達の楽曲にはいつもテクニカルパートとリフが存在するよ。Jon はあと１枚だけ CRYPTOPSY でアルバムを作りたかったから復帰したんだ。そしてやり遂げたんだよ。音楽を作りたい人、人前でプレイするのが好きな人、音楽をアピールするためにツアーするのが好きな人。様々なんだよ。幸運なことに僕は全部好きなんだ！！！だけど誰もが出来ることではないよ。過酷なコンディション、少ないサラリー、エゴといった問題によって長く続けられないミュージシャンだっているんだ。新作は現在のラインナップで作られた。それだけだよ。
Q7: Next year, 2016 will 20th anniversary of your legendary record “None So Vile”. Do you have any plans to celebrate that? Looking back now, what is “None So Vile” to you?
【FLO】: I believe that we may tour the entire NSV album in 2016. Maybe we will work on some biographical DVD. Let’s see…
I don’t remember much about NSV, but I’m super impressed that it has done so well and influenced so many people. It was innovating for the time I guess.
Q7: 来年、2016年は名作”None So Vile” の20周年です。何か特別なプランはありますか？また、今振り返ってみて、”None So Vile” はどういったレコードですか？
【FLO】: 2016年には “None So Vile” 完全再現ツアーを行う予定だよ。伝記的なDVDも制作するだろうね。うーんとね、”None So Vile” についてそんなに覚えている訳じゃないんだけど、あのアルバムが成し遂げたこと、多くの人に影響を与えたことには非常に感動をおぼえているよ。おそらく、あの時代においては革新的だったんだろうね。
Q8: You are one of the originator of Technical Death Metal. When you started writing this style of music, what was the inspiration for you?
【FLO】: Thank you! At the time I guess I just wanted to mix extreme drumming with other drumming styles. The more time passed the more I listened to other styles and the easier it was to realize my original plan. Still today I look forward to the next release to try new things out.
Inspirations are endless as far as I’m concerned!!! So much music, so many people!!!
Q8: あなたはテクニカルデスメタルのオリジネーターの1人です。こういったスタイルで音楽を作り始めた時、インスピレーションの源は何だったのでしょう？
【FLO】: ありがとう！当時の僕はエクストリームなドラミングと他のドラムスタイルをミックスしたかったんだと思う。あれから時が流れて、僕はもっといろいろな音楽を聴いているから、そのオリジナルのプランを実現しやすくなっているんだよ。今日でもまだ僕は新しいことに挑戦した次のリリースを心待ちにしているんだ。僕について言えば、インスピレーションは尽きることがないね！！世の中には沢山の音楽や人間が存在するんだから！！
