DISC REVIEW “FROM THE GALLERY OF SLEEP”

RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS, TOOL, RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE、そして近年では INTRONAUT とある種独創性を追求したアートの都 L.A.
フルブラストで幕を開ける夢への廻廊 “Copper Wasp” こそ “From the Gallery of Sleep” への強烈なインビテーション。

NIGHT VERSES “FROM THE GALLERY OF SLEEP” : 10/10

INTERVIEW WITH REILLY HERRERA

Q1: This is the first interview with you. So, at first, could you tell us about yourself and band itself? What kind of music were you listening to, when you were growing up?

【REILLY】: My name is Reilly Herrera and I play bass in Night Verses. We’ve been playing together for over 15 years, but under the name Night Verses since 2012. From The Gallery Of Sleep is our first full length instrumental record and came out earlier this Summer on Equal Vision Records.
Nick, Aric and I all grew up listening to different music to be honest – as kids it varied for each us from Tool to New-Wave to old school Punk. We all had more similar tastes when we were teenagers, and that’s when we started writing music together. It’s still that same way today and I think that helps keep it fresh for each of us – the spot where all our tastes converge into one sound.

“From The Gallery Of Sleep” は僕たちにとって初めてのインストゥルメンタルレコードさ。

Q2: What inspired you to start playing bass guitar? Who was your musical hero at that time?

【REILLY】: I initially started playing guitar but I’ve always been enamored with music in general. I switched to Bass about 10 – 11 years ago out of necessity. We couldn’t find anyone else we wanted to play with us and Nick and I were both playing guitar. The way we started writing then was the beginning of what became Night Verses, and it was a real natural switch. As a bassist – Justin Chancellor, Jeff Caxide, Victor Wooten, and Matt Freeman were the first heavy influences that came to mind.

Q3: The unity of you three seems to be very strong, isn’t it?

【REILLY】: Yes. Essentially we were the only ones left who kept writing music together relentlessly through-out the years. So, influence-wise, I comes from a punk and emo (first wave) background, Nick has this endless obsession with anything heavy and Aric spend most of his time listening to anything from trip-hop to 80s post-punk. I think progressive rock and metal were the only two genres we all shared an interest in throughout the years.

Q4: So, it was big surprise that Douglas left the band, and you decided to become an instrumental band. We think it’s drastic move, but was that change natural for you?

【REILLY】: It was a drastic move from an outside perspective but for all of us it actually was very natural and neutral. Douglas leaving was completely mutual and we had already composed most of our music prior to him writing vocals in the past. It was difficult filling all the space where Douglas would normally be singing, but that was the whole point of deciding to continue on as an instrumental band.

Q5: What made you choose “From the Gallery of Sleep” as a title of your new begging record?

【REILLY】: It’s a kind of written way to represent the albums’ theme – encompassing dream states and the idea of exploring different states of consciousness etc… The title is a example of how we wanted to channel those feelings as any artistic representation of that possible – song titles, album title, samples, and artwork, for example.

Q5: “From the Gallery of Sleep”

【REILLY】: From the Gallery of Sleep”

Q6: Musically, “From the Gallery of Sleep” is perfect art for me. It’s really beautiful, dynamic, intelligent, and eclectic. Definitely, Cult of Luna, Russian Circles, Animals As Leaders, Tool, Brian Eno, and many other elements are mixed very unique your own way. Do you think such a diversity is “Key” of this record?

【REILLY】: Thank you so much for such a compliment. The fact that you listened that closely and were able to pull out those references is very flattering and means a lot. Diversity is definitely key for us, and we don’t ever want to overdo or repeat anything more than necessary. We love writing music and constantly getting new influences and finding ways to implement them. Thanks again, and I think the diversity you mentioned is a testament to us constantly looking for different elements to bring into our art in general.

Q7: Regarding eclectic, the contrasts between Prog and Post-rock, Tech and Atmosphere, Fast and Slow, Modern and Organic are really stand out in this record. In other words, Djent and Post-rock are really worn-out methods, but once they are mixed, it becomes very new to me. Did you intend that when you were writing the album?

【REILLY】: It’s never our intent to sound like something else, even one genre in particular. I understand how certain parts can lean towards a certain genre but mixing different elements of music, art and general feelings we want to convey is the most important thing to us. That part is definitely intended, especially since we switched to being an instrumental band as there is no exact lyrical guide for anyone to follow.
The hard part about music today is people want to understand you right away. They want to sum you up based off of your name, artwork and the first 30 seconds of the first song they hear. So it’s weird being an instrumental act because there are such specific factions. So we are kinda just floating between right now, excited to see what types of music listeners connect with this new record.

Q8: Maybe, Trip-hop, Electronic, and movie soundtracks also become inspiration of “From the Gallery of Sleep”. So, how about Japanese video game soundtracks?

【REILLY】: We’d love to! Have them contact us if you know who to talk to, haha.
