「このアルバムが実際に出るまで、誰も STATIC-X を2020年に蘇らせることが可能だなんて思ってもいなかったよね。だけど実際、その不可能が実現したんだよ。」
悲劇の灰から立ち昇る再生の紫煙。予期せぬ喪失に吹き込まれる新たな生命。インダストリアルメタルに革命をもたらした20年の後、STATIC-X は Wayne Static の悲劇的な死とともに、永遠の沈黙に包まれる運命だと誰もが思っていました。
しかし、傑作 “Wisconsin Death Trip” を創成したオリジナルメンバーの団結、Wayne Static の遺した遺産、そして Xer0 という Wayne の魂を宿す亡霊によって、STATIC-X は Nu-metal/インダストリアルメタルの象徴に恥じない新たな一歩を踏み出したのです。
「僕の顔が STATIC-X の顔になるのは嫌だったからね。それは途方もなく間違ったことに思えたよ。自分の名前を中心にしたくないんだ。Xer0 は姿であり、キャラクターであり、存在である。 それが一番 STATIC-X のためになると思っているんだよ。僕の目標は常に STATIC-X にベストなことをすることなんだ。」
この世から姿を消したにもかかわらず、STATIC-X は今でも Wayne Static のプロジェクトであることは明らかです。それほどまでに、彼のビッグロックボイスとインダストリアルエナジー、そして重力に逆らったヘアスタイルのカリスマ性は際立っていました。
実際、SLIPKNOT, SYSTEM OF A DOWN, KORN, COAL CHAMBER といったメタルの新たな波が台頭し花開いた90年代後半、インダストリアルを基調にヘヴィーなディスコトリップを展開する STATIC-X の “Evil Disco” は完膚なきまでにあの時流へ符号していました。
そして、個性際立つ Nu-metal サーカスの中でも、フレディー・クルーガーの出で立ちで逆重力ヘアを纏い、映画と漫画のキャラクターを行き来しながら、共産主義から薬物乱用まで吐き綴る Wayne の存在感は遂に “Wisconsin Death Trip” のセールスをミリオンにまで導いたのです。
ゆえに、プロデューサー、パフォーマー、そして伝説の声を補う存在としてバンドに加わった Xer0 は文字通り、自らの存在感をゼロとして Wayne のマスクを被り STATIC-X の一部分に成りきりました。
「1999年の、STATIC-X お馴染みのビジュアル的な存在感を表現したかったんだよ。だからこそ毎晩スパイクヘアにしたんだ。ファンには、1999年に戻ったかのような、邪悪で斬新なタイムワープをしているような気分になってもらいたかったんだよ。そのためには、僕の “顔がない” ことがどうしても必要だったんだ。」
傑作の20周年を祝う旅路を終えた後、STATIC-X は “Project Regeneration Vol.1” と名付けられたプロジェクトに着手し、万難を排して新たなアルバムを世界へと放ちました。それはまさしく “再生” の道程。
Wayne の遺したデモテープを発掘し、Xer0 の声と手術でボーカルラインを繋ぎ、Tony, Ken, Koichi の偉大なトライアングラーは新たにレコーディングを行い楽曲に命を吹き込みます。完成したレコードは、当然ながらパッチワークの域を超えたノスタルジーとエナジーのダイナミックな泉でした。
チャンキーでメソジカルなビート、不気味なダウンチューンに近年再評価を受けつつあるアグロテック。MINISTRY の Al Jourgensen まで巻き込んで、これほどダンスとヘッドバンキングを両立させる音世界は彼らにしか作り得ない魔窟でしょう。Nu-Metal のダークサイドを投影した邪悪で斬新なディスコの復活です。
「多くの人が知っていると思っていると思うけど、実際には誰も何も「知っている」人はいないんだよ。憶測はたくさんあるけど、僕はそのどれにも興味は無いよ。もし僕が自分の正体を明かすことに決めたら、自分のやり方でそうするだろうね。自分がその権利を得たと信じているから。」
今回弊誌では、Xer0 にインタビューを行うことができました。一部では DOPE の鬼才 Edsel Dope ではないかとも囁かれていますが、どうなんでしょう。「Wayne は僕の友人だった。そして何より、アーティストとして、僕が信じられないほどのリスペクトを捧げている人物さ。」 どうぞ！！

INTERVIEW WITH Xer0
Q1: First of all, When you were asked to join this band, did you decide from the start to take on this huge task?
【Xer0】: To be honest, I was never actually asked to join the band. As a producer and an old friend to the band, I offered to help with going through the old tracks and tapes, and to help establish a plan and to help identify what I thought would be possible. Everything after that just sort of fell into place and progressed very naturally. I hate to sound corny, but it was all just meant to be.
Q1: まず STATIC-X 加入を持ちかけられた時、すぐこの大きな仕事を引き受けることを決めたのでしょうか？
【Xer0】: 正直に言うけど、バンドに加わって欲しいと頼まれたことはないんだよ。プロデューサー、そしてバンドの古い友人として、僕は古いトラックやテープを調べたり、計画を立てたり、これから可能だと思ったことの判別を手伝うことを申し出たんだ。
その後、すべては収まるべき場所に収まり、とても自然に進んでいったね。陳腐に聞こえるのは嫌だけど、全てはそうなる運命だったのさ。
Q2: I’m sure a lot of fans know who you are, but you and Static-X have always been good friends, right? As the same musician, what did you think of them at that time?
【Xer0】: I’m sure that allot of people think that they know but I’m quite certain that nobody actually “Knows” anything. There is allot of speculation, but I’m not interested in any of that. If I ever decide to reveal my identity, I’ll do it on my own terms. I believe that I’ve earned that right. I’ve been as humble as I know how to be. I’ve insisted on keeping the focus on the 4 guys that started this band, while other people try so hard to make it about me. It’s kind of crazy. Most people in my position would be very quick to want to show their face and raise their own profile and bask in the attention. I’ve done the opposite and I wish people would respect my decision to keep the focus on the 4 guys that started the band.
Q2: 多くのファンはあなたの正体を知っていると思いますが…
【Xer0】: 多くの人が知っていると思っていると思うけど、実際には誰も何も「知っている」人はいないんだよ。憶測はたくさんあるけど、僕はそのどれにも興味は無いよ。もし僕が自分の正体を明かすことに決めたら、自分のやり方でそうするだろうね。
自分がその権利を得たと信じているから。僕は自分の知っている限り、謙虚であり続けてきたからね。メディアが僕のことを取り上げようと必死になっている間も、僕はこのバンドを始めた4人に焦点が当たるようやり続けてきた。
狂気の沙汰だよ。 僕の立場ならほとんどの人たちは、自分の顔を見せて、自分の知名度を上げ注目を浴びようとするのが普通だと思うんだ。 僕はその反対のことをしてきたし、バンドを始めた4人に焦点を当て続けるという僕の決断を尊重してくれたらいいなと思っているんだ。
Q3: So, what’s Wayne to you? Are you his replacement? Substitute? Or something else?
【Xer0】: He was my friend. He’s also someone that I have incredible respect for as an artist.
Q3: では、あなたにとって Wayne Static とはどういう存在ですか？
【Xer0】: 彼は僕の友人だった。そして何より、アーティストとして、僕が信じられないほどのリスペクトを捧げている人物さ。
Q4: Why do you wear a mask and call yourself Xer0 in Static-X?
【Xer0】: Wayne was not only the singer for Static-X, he was also kind of like the bands mascot. The hair is the first thing that people think of with Static-X. We were celebrating the 20th anniversary of Wisconsin Death Trip, so, for me, I just wanted to give people a Wisconsin Death Trip experience and I wanted to keep the focus on the 4 dudes that started the band . I wanted to be representing the familiar visual presence of Static-X from 1999; that’s why I spiked my hair up each night. I wanted the fans to feel like they were entering into some sort of wicked, futuristic time warp back to 1999. My being faceless was totally necessary for that.
I don’t want my face to be the face of Static-X. that seems very wrong. I don’t want my name to be at the center. Xer0 is a figure, a character, an entity. I believe that this serves Static-X the best. My goal has always been to do what is best for Static-X.
Q4: STATIC-X では、マスクを装着して、Xer0 と名乗っていますね？
【Xer0】: Wayne は STATIC-X のボーカルであるだけでなく、バンドのマスコットのような存在でもあった。だって STATIC-X といえば、あの髪型が真っ先に思い浮かぶよね。僕たちは “Wisconsin Death Trip” の20周年を祝っていたから、僕としてはあのアルバムを体験してもらいたかったし、バンドを始めた4人にこそ焦点を当てたかったんだ。

Q5: Musically, “Project Regeneration Vol.1” reminds me of Static-X early days like “Wisconsin Death Trip”, but also it’s partly a modern update, right? Literally, this record is “Regeneration” of “evil disco”, would you agree?
【Xer0】: Yea, absolutely. Before all of this, nobody would have ever thought it would be possible for Static-X to be alive and thriving in 2020, but that is exactly what has happened.
Q5: 音楽的に “Project Regeneration Vol.1” は、その “Wisconsin Death Trip” が象徴するバンド初期の “Evil Disco” を現代にアップデートしたような作品ですよね？
【Xer0】: うん、間違いないね。このアルバムが実際に出るまで、誰も STATIC-X を2020年に蘇らせることが可能だなんて思ってもいなかったよね。だけど実際、その不可能が実現したんだよ。
Q6: How did you feel about sharing the vocal part with the late Wayne?
【Xer0】: I feel great about it. it was a tremendous amount of work.
I produced this album from start to finish; I extracted Wayne’s vocals from the damaged tapes, I pieced all of it together and I agonized over the details, while filling the missing gaps with my own voice.
This process was way harder than people can probably really imagine; the Wayne vocals were not from high quality demos that we were just waiting to be mixed. This stuff was a fucking mess.
The project really needed a hybrid producer / creative person like myself in order to help evolve, so much of what we had was incomplete. You couldn’t ask for that energy to come from Tony or Ken or Koichi because their roles have already been clearly defined, and you don’t want to mess with that chemistry. I knew that it was gonna be a crazy challenge but had a tremendous drive and passion for the challenge, and I just began to develop a clear vision for how we could grow this from a conceptualization and into reality. There is no blueprint for something like this and I’d say that 99 times out of 100, this project would have missed the mark on multiple levels, but once Tony and I aligned, we knew that we were willing to do whatever it took and that we would spend as much time and energy that was necessary to be sure that our vision for this became that 1% that we could all be proud of.
Q6: 亡き Wayne とボーカルを分け合うことについては、どう感じましたか？
【Xer0】: 素晴らしい気分だよ。とてつもない量の仕事だったんだ。破損したテープから Wayne のボーカルを抽出し、細かい部分を苦悩しながら全てを繋いでいき、足りない部分を自分の声で埋めていったんだ。
Wayne のボーカルは、ミックスされるのを待っていただけの高品質なデモではなかったからね。この作業は人が想像している以上に大変だったんだよ。
このプロジェクトが進化するためには、僕のようなハイブリッドなプロデューサーでクリエイティブな人間が必要だった。Tony や Ken や Koichi にエネルギーを求めることはできなかったからね。彼らの役割はすでに明確に定義されていたから。それにあのケミストリーに干渉するわけにはいかないだろう？
僕はこれがクレイジーな挑戦になることはわかっていたけど、とてつもない意欲と情熱を持っていたんだ。それにこのコンセプトを実現するためのクリアなビジョンも育ち始めていた。青写真なんてないし、100回のうち99回は様々な面で失敗するようなプロジェクトだろう。
それでも、Tony と僕が一致団結すれば、必要なだけの時間とエネルギーを費やして、どんなことでも挑戦しこなせるとわかっていたからね。僕たちのビジョンが、全員が誇れるような残りの1％になるためにね。
Q7: In recent years, Nu-metal has been re-evaluated, and Static-X has been mostly classified as Nu-metal. What do you think about this re-evaluated movement?
【Xer0】: What comes around, goes around; I’m glad that it’s got some new life and new love. There is something to be said about simplicity. I think that’s a big part of what made Nu metal work.
Q7: Nu-metal の再評価が近年進んでいますよね。STATIC-X も Nu-metal に分類されることが多かったと思いますが。
【Xer0】: 流行りは巡るものだよ。Nu-metal が新しい命と新しい愛を手に入れたことが嬉しいんだ。
シンプルであることこそがその秘訣だろう。それが Nu-metal を機能させる大きな要因だと思う。
Q8: What do you think of Koichi Fukuda’s talent? He is Japanese, but he seems to be more famous and appreciated abroad than in Japan.
【Xer0】: He’s incredible; Koichi is such a big part of the evil disco sound. His programming is legendary and he is an amazing guitarist and also a classically trained pianist. Amazing artist; amazing human being. I’m very honored to work with him.
Q8: Koichi Fukuda の才能についてはどう思っていますか？
彼は日本でよりも、むしろ海外で高く評価されているように感じますが…
【Xer0】: 彼は驚異的だよ。Koichi こそが “Evil Disco” サウンドの大部分を生み出しているのさ。彼のプログラミングは伝説的だし、素晴らしいギタリストでもある。
そして、クラッシックの教育を受けたピアニストでもあるんだから。最高のアーティストで最高の人間さ。彼と一緒にやれてとても光栄だよ。
