ロックやメタルの世界における女性の躍動は、間違いなく21世紀におけるメジャーなトピックの一つです。ただし、その開拓には古くはジャニスにスージー・クワトロ、アニー・ハズラムから、アンネケ、ターヤ、エイミー・リーまで、ゼロから土壌を培った幾人もの献身が捧げられています。Casey Lee Williams の母 Sandy Casey もその一人。そうして今、引き継がれた遺産はプログメタルの世界を変革へと導きます。
実は、Casey はすでに有名人です。あの全世界で1億再生以上を記録し第8シーズンまで継続されているモンスターコンテンツ、大ヒット3DCGアニメ “RWBY” のサウンドトラックでメインシンガーを務めているのですから。それだけではありません。彼女の父は Jeff Williams。”RWBY” シリーズのコンポーザーで音楽監督。母との共演もそのサウンドトラックで実現。サラブレッドの血と才能は、そうしてさらなるアーティスティックな飛躍を求めました。

デビューフル “Limbo” でバンドが語るのは異世界からもたらされた辺獄のストーリー。幼い頃から日本の文化やアートを愛しアニメを見続けた異能のギタリスト Martin と、映画のサウンドトラックを養分とする鍵盤奏者 De Lima、そして “RWBY” で近未来の理不尽な御伽草子を紡ぐ Casey が交わるにはあまりに完璧な舞台です。
「アトモスフェリックなサウンドとピアノを、大きな作品の一部として使用することで、リスナーの心を掴み、より集中して聴くことができるようになると思う。ヘヴィーなギターリフと優雅なテクスチャーの並置は、このバンドのサウンドの大きな部分を占めているよ。」
ストーリーへの没入感を加速する対比のダイナミズムと、メタルとサントラのマリアージュが投影を加速する音映像。もちろん、その難題はバークリーのカラフルなテクニックと、Casey の伸びやかでムード満載な歌声によって実現されていくのです。
クラッシックやジャズ、ポストロックのキメラさえ基本。ここには PROTEST THE HERO も、DREAM THEATER も、PLINI も、RADIOHEAD も、ほんの少しの Djent も、CASIOPEA のようなジャパニーズフュージョンだって、それにアニメのイントロやアウトロのドラマティシズムまでもが繊細に大胆に織り込まれているのですから。最新 EP “Under the Veil” の幕引きに流れる Casey の気高きソプラノは、20年代プログメタルの辿る道をほんのりと照らしているのかも知れませんね。
今回弊誌では、OK GOODNIGHT にインタビューを行うことが出来ました。「僕たちは皆、好きな音楽や音楽を演奏するようになった経緯が全く違っていて、それがアーティスティックな選択にも表れていると思うよ。それに、長所と短所もそれぞれ違っているよね。」どうぞ！！

INTERVIEW WITH OK GOODNIGHT
Q1: First of all, OK Goodnight is a very impressive band name. What is the meaning behind it?
【OK GOODNIGHT】: Ok Goodnight is actually more of a silly name rather than an impressive one! Martin had this inside joke with his roommates that consisted of saying ‘ok goodnight’ in a really goofy way before going to bed. Elizabeth Hull (our manager and backing vocalist) suggested using the joke as a name, and we all ended up loving it!
Q1: OK GOODNIGHT というバンド名はとても印象に残りますね。どんな意味が込められているのですか？
【OK GOODNIGHT】: まあ、OK GOODNIGHT って、印象的と言うよりバカげた名前なんだよね！ Martin がルームメイトと、内輪のネタで寝る前に “Ok, Goodnight” って本当に間抜けな感じでジョークにしてたんだ。
マネージャーでバッキングボーカルの Elizabeth Hull がそのジョークをバンド名にすれば？って勧めてくれたんだよ。結局、バンド全員が気に入ったね！
Q2: How did OK Goodnight come to be? What kind of music were you listening to, when you were growing up?
【OK GOODNIGHT】: Our band started at Berklee College of Music where Martìn first started writing instrumental compositions with our drummer Augusto and keys player De Lima. After a while we decided that we wanted some of our songs to have vocals written over them, so Martìn reached out to Casey, asking if she would sit in on a rehearsal to see if she’d be interested in joining. From that first rehearsal, Casey knew she wanted to be a part of the project and accept the challenge of writing over some very complex, but beautiful music. Just a few months later, we put out our debut album Limbo. Growing up, both Casey and Augusto listened to a lot of The Beatles, Martin listened to Megadeath, and DeLima listened to Queen.
Q2: バンド結成の経緯を聞かせてください。メンバーはどんな音楽的背景を持っていますか？
【OK GOODNIGHT】: 僕たちのバンドは、バークリー音楽大学で始まり、ギタリストの Martin はドラマーの Augusto、キープレイヤーの De Lima と一緒にインストゥルメンタル曲を書き始めたんだ。
しばらくして、ボーカルも僕たちの曲に入れたいと思ったから、Casey に連絡を取り、リハーサルに参加しないかと誘ったんだよ。その最初のリハーサルの時から、彼女はこのプロジェクトに参加したいと思っていたし、非常に複雑だけど美しい音楽の上に歌を乗せるという挑戦を受け入れたいと思っていたんだ。それから数ヶ月後、僕たちはデビューアルバム “Limbo”を発表したんだよ。

Q3: For example, “Think Again”, “Rapture”‘s artwork is reminiscent of Japanese anime and video games. Do you guys have a connection with Japanese culture?
【OK GOODNIGHT】: Martin’s always been very big on Japanese art & culture, watching tons of anime growing up, eating Japanese cuisine and listening to Japanese music! Without a doubt it is one of our dreams to visit, tour and have some fun! The art was done by Martin’s cousin Juliana Arciniegas; she was able to beautifully meld together our album concept and our appreciation for the Japanese art style.
Q3: あなたたちのアートワークは日本のアニメやビデオゲームを連想させますね？
【OK GOODNIGHT】: Martin はいつも日本の芸術や文化に興味があって、アニメをたくさん見て育ち、日本料理を食べ、日本の音楽を聴いてきたんだ。間違いなく、日本を訪れて、ツアーをして、楽しむことは僕たちの夢の一つなんだよ。
アートワークは Martin のいとこの Juliniana Arciniegas が担当したんだ。彼女は僕たちのアルバムのコンセプトと、日本のアートスタイルへの感謝の気持ちを見事に融合させてくれたね。
Q4: What makes OK Goodnight so appealing is its diverse musicality. From prog-metal to jazz, math rock to post-hardcore. Is that kind of eclectic music a mixture of each member’s background?
【OK GOODNIGHT】: We all have very different backgrounds in terms of the music we like and how we ended up playing music, and I think that shows in the artistic choices we make. We also all have different strengths and weaknesses. De Lima’s influence in film scoring and sound design is key for creating atmospheres like the intros of Awake and Unraveled; as well as the beautiful piano driven interludes that take place in both our releases. Martin Gonzalez’s background in metal and progressive rock brings violent riffs like the breakdown section of Awake, and the soulfully crafted solos which balance melody and virtuosity. Augusto’s background in progressive rock brings darker elements to the mix like the bridge section of the epic Unraveled, and some intricate, heavy drum playing. Casey’s background in metal and alternative rock give the group a unique and powerful voice which can be as violent as the breakdown section in Awake or as soft as the mellow verse of Unraveled. We think the main reason that we have such a varied sound is that each one of us tries to showcase our own strengths, while letting the other member showcase theirs.

【OK GOODNIGHT】: 僕たちは皆、好きな音楽や音楽を演奏するようになった経緯が全く違っていて、それがアーティスティックな選択にも表れていると思うよ。それに、長所と短所もそれぞれ違っているよね。
De Lima が映画のスコアやサウンドデザインから受けた影響は、”Awake” や”Unraveled” のイントロのような雰囲気を作るための鍵となっているし、2つの作品共に存在する美しいピアノのインタルードもそうだね。
Martin Gonzalez が持つメタルとプログレッシブロックのバックグラウンドは、”Awake” で聴けるブレイクダウンセクションの激しいリフや、メロディーと匠の技のバランスをとるソウルフルなソロももたらしているよね。
Augusto のプログロックのバックグラウンドは、エピック “Unraveled” のブリッジセクションや複雑でヘビーなドラム・プレイのようなダークな要素をもたらしているね。
Casey はメタルとオルタナティブロックのバックグラウンドを持つから、”Awake” のブレイクダウンセクションのような暴力的なものから、”Unraveled” のメロウなヴァースみたいにソフトなものまで、ユニークでパワフルな声をこのグループに与えているよ。
僕たちがこのように変化に富んだサウンドを持つ最大の理由は、一人一人が自分たちの強みを発揮しようとする一方で、他のメンバーにも自分の強みを発揮させているからだと思うんだ。
Q5: Despite the increase in recent years, there are still not many bands in this genre with women on vocals. Casey’s voice is really amazing and could be the catalyst for a woman’s entry into prog-metal?
【CASEY】: We agree that there are not many women seen in this particular genre of music, but there is, without a doubt, a vastly overlooked list of women pioneering the genre with amazing talent, and doing a lot for metal and rock music as a whole.
I don’t think I would’ve gained the confidence I have today without vocalists like Hayley Williams, and my brilliant friends Adrienne Cowan and Elizabeth Hull. And I, of course, would be nowhere without the guidance and offerings of my mom Sandy Casey. She has been the most inspiring singer to influence my life.” – Casey Williams
Q5: 近年は若干増えたとは言え、まだまだメタル世界で女性、女性ボーカルは多くはありませんね。Casey の魅力的な声が、後続に道を開くような気がします。

Q6: The use of the piano with post-rock atmospheres is also great, isn’t it?
【OK GOODNIGHT】: We’d like our releases to be an immersive experience; the use of atmospheric sounds and piano as a part of a bigger piece we think really serves to capture the listener in a way that makes them lean in and listen more intently. The juxtaposing of heavy guitar riffs with gentle textures is a big part of what the sound of the band is. A lot of the artists that we all like use similar concepts to create that immersive quality, so this is a way of incorporating that influence into our music.
Q6: お話しにも出ましたが、ピアノの響きは、時にポストロックのような幽玄なアトモスフィアをもたらしますね？
【OK GOODNIGHT】: アトモスフェリックなサウンドとピアノを、大きな作品の一部として使用することで、リスナーの心を掴み、より集中して聴くことができるようになると思うんだ。

Q7: “Limbo” means “the supposed abode of the souls of unbaptized infants, and of the just who died before Christ’s coming”. What’s the concept of your debut-full?
【OK GOODNIGHT】: The concept of our album revolves around a young girl attempting to survive in what seems to be a monstrous apocalypse that is ravaging the planet, opening strange portals and bringing about otherworldly giantesses who destroy anyone and anything in their path. As the album progresses, we see the girl grow more and more lonely, searching for any sign that she might prevail. Although she lacks strength, she retains her will to go on and plunges deeper into a world that has become an endless “Limbo.”
Q7: アルバムタイトルとなった “Limbo” とは、辺獄、地獄の辺土という意味ですが。
【OK GOODNIGHT】: 僕たちのアルバムのコンセプトは、奇妙な扉が開かれ、地球を荒廃させ、誰でも何でも破壊する異世界の巨人がやってきたような巨大な黙示録の中で生き残ろうとしている若い女の子を中心に展開しているよ。
アルバムが進むにつれ、少女はますます孤独になり、彼女が勝利するかもしれない兆候を探しているのがわかるよね。力を失いながらも、彼女は前に進む意志を持ち続け、果てしない “リンボ “と化した世界へと深く突入していくんだ。
Q8: The 2010s saw the rise and fall of djent. Will you be the trendsetters of the prog world in the 2020s?
【OK GOODNIGHT】: We honestly don’t worry about that too much; as long as we keep making music that we all enjoy and keep true to ourselves and our visions as artists, we’ll be content with what comes of it. Most of our music is born without trends in mind, and I think thats what makes us stand out!
Q8: さて、2010年代は Djent の繁栄と衰退を目の当たりにしたわけですが、OK GOODNIGHT が20年代プログメタルのトレンドセッターと考えてもよいでしょうか？
【OK GOODNIGHT】: 正直、あまり気にしていないんだ。みんなが楽しめる音楽を作り続けて、自分たちやアーティストとしてのビジョンに忠実であり続けている限り、その結果に満足しているよ。
僕たちの音楽のほとんどは流行を意識せずに生まれてきたもので、それが僕たちを際立たせていると思うからね。
