DISC REVIEW “MARAKO TE RUKI”
「ポリネシアの自然環境は平和で、とても美しい….。 しかし、翌日の朝、怒りに満ちた稲妻が空を引き裂き、”トケラウ” の強風が怒りに満ちてグリーンがかった海の上に重く暗い積乱雲を吹きこみ、ターコイズ・ブルーの海はダーク・ブルーのモンスターへと変わっていく。
巨大な海は、地球の下にある神々の領域からしか知られていないようなパワーでサンゴ礁を叩いていく！この南国のトロピカルな世界にもダークサイドはあって、そこにもたくさんの美しさがあるんだよ。だからこそ僕たちは、この場所でメタルを始めたんだ」
90年代、絶滅が近いとも思われたヘヴィ・メタル。しかし21世紀に入り、そのメタルの生命力、感染力、包容力が世界を圧倒し、拡大し、包み込んでいます。
様々なジャンルを飲み込み、あらゆる場所に進出し、どんな制約をも設けない。一見攻撃的でダークなヘヴィ・メタルに宿る優しさや寛容さが世界中、あらゆる場所のあらゆる人にとっての希望の光となっている。メタルには崇めるべき神も、虐げられる主人も、壁となる国境も存在しない。年齢や人種、宗教や信条を問わずすべての人々と分かち合える。そんな現代の理想郷をメタルは育んでいると、きっと多くの人が感じているはずです。
しかしそれでも、フランス領ポリネシアという、太平洋ど真ん中の小さな島々で、タヒチを有する南国の楽園で、高い感染力を秘めた鋭きメタルの刃が研がれているとは想像もつきませんでした。
もちろん、メタル、特にブラックメタルがそのルーツから遠く離れてしまった事実を認めない人は常に存在するでしょう。しかし、いわゆる究極の “アウトサイダー” な音楽が、いつのまにか共通の理想と反抗精神、そして音の葉によってこれほど多種多様な人々を結びつけるようになったことは、深い皮肉とまでは言わないまでも、ほとんど魔法のようにも思えます。そしてもしブラック・メタルがノルウェーの地下世界を離れなかったら、”Marako Te Ruki” を聴くことはできなかったにちがいないのです。
「実は、ツアモツ語の話者は6000人しか残っていないんだ。ツアモツ諸島では現在、フランス語とタヒチ語を話す人が多くなっていて、ツアモツ語は徐々に失われつつあるんだよ」
そうして、現代メタルにおける三原則は、ついに少数民族のもとまでたどり着きました。サウス・パシフィック・メタルを指標する TE RUKI の首謀者 Aroma Salmon は、母語の話者が6000人のみとなったツアモツ族の一員。アーティストとしてツアモツ伝統のタトゥーを掘りながら、デスメタルやブラックメタルを諳んじていた Aroma は、まさに世界が縮んだ現代のメタルワールドを体現する存在でしょう。そして、少数民族の言語が大言語に飲み込まれ消えてしまう言語消失が深刻な問題となる中で、ツアモツ語で歌われた TE RUKI のアルバム “Marako Te Ruki” は、文化や言語の保存という面においても重要な役割を果たしていくはずです。そう、メタルは癌には効かないまでも、文化を切り取った美しい写真にはなるのです。
「僕たちの歌は、ポリネシアの神々をモチーフにしている。マフイケは火を発見した半神で、ルアハツは海の神。さまざまに異なる世界と、その幻想的な状況における人間の位置づけを想像するのがとても楽しいんだよ。まさにワイルドだよね！」
吠え叫ぶ武骨なボーカル、焼け付くようなギター、ざわめきの鍵盤、脈打つリズムの大げさなブレンドは、地元の神々をテーマとしている点もあわせて、TE RUKI が ROTTING CHRIST を中心とするギリシャのシーンに感化されていることを裏付けます。同時に、”Ruahatu” の初期 METALLICA とポリネシアン・パーカッションの蜜月、”Te Aka Tamaki” の儀式的なリズムのフックと “Komeri a Kamahi” の臆面もないメロディーの威厳。そこには、初期の EMPEROR や DISSECTION の系譜につながりながら、明確な音楽的ブレイク・スルーを果たそうというポリネシアの誇りや魂が熱く込められているのです。
ブラックメタルの最大の強みは、人間社会がこれほど多様化する以前の根源的な部分、原始的な部分で分かり合えること。 認め合えること。様々に異なる文化を持つ人々が、自己表現の器として誰でも容易に使用できること。そんなブラックメタルの力を借りながら、TE RUKI はポリネシアのパーカッションを使い、母国語のみで歌い、叫ぶという決断によって真にユニークで独特の魅惑的な体験を生み出すことになりました。それにしても、Tamatoa のパーカッション・ドラムは異次元の輝き。メタルにおけるドラム革命が今ここに。
今回弊誌では、Aroma Salmon にインタビューを行うことができました。「ここでは、ポリネシア語で考え、ポリネシア語で話しながら、僕たちは新しいテクノロジーで世界中とつながれている。僕たちを取り巻くパワフルで美しい環境を実際に感じながらね」 どうぞ！！

INTERVIEW WITH AROMA SALMON
Q1: When I think of French Polynesia, I think of the bright sun and sea. I don’t have the image of thriving metal scene at all. How did you get into metal in such a place?
【AROMA】: Indeed we have beautiful sunshine reflecting on calm blue and green lagoons, and when the sun sets, all the pink and purple colors evaporate from the sandy beaches, while hundreds of birds are coming back from the hunt, with little fish tails hanging from their beaks. They glide above the shiny waters, going back to land… where hungry little bird whistle melodies, that only mother birds understand and above all, recognize the baby amongst a thousand… It’s peaceful and so much beauty in this natural environment…
But, in the morning of the next day, lightning full of rage, striking, tearing the skys, while strong Tokerau winds are blowing heavy dark and loaded clouds above the angry turquoise, greenish, waters, turning, into dark blue monsters. Giant oceans pounding the reefs with such power, only known from the regions of the Gods below the level of the earth!
So much beauty in this dark side of the south tropical world… This is how we got into metal in this place.
Q1: フランス領ポリネシアといえば、私たちは眩しい太陽、白い砂浜、エメラルドグリーンの海を想像します。暗く孤独なメタルとは真逆の場所のようにも思えますが…？
【AROMA】: たしかに僕たちの国は、穏やかな青と緑のサンゴ礁に美しい日差しが反射している。日が沈むと、砂浜からピンクや紫の色がすべて蒸発し、何百もの鳥が、くちばしから小さな魚の尾をぶら下げて狩りから戻ってくるよ。輝く水面の上を滑空しながらね。お腹を空かせた小鳥が、母鳥にしか分からないメロディーを口笛で吹き、彼らは何千の中の一羽を見分ける…この場所の自然環境は平和で、とても美しい…..。
しかし、翌日の朝、怒りに満ちた稲妻が空を引き裂き、”トケラウ” の強風が怒りに満ちてグリーンがかった海の上に重く暗い積乱雲を吹きこみ、ターコイズ・ブルーの海はダーク・ブルーのモンスターへと変わっていく。巨大な海は、地球の下にある神々の領域からしか知られていないようなパワーでサンゴ礁を叩いていく！

Q2: What kind of music were you listening to, when you were growing up? What kind of work do you usually do now?
【AROMA】: When I was growing up I used to listen to Metallica (before the black album), Cannibal corpse, Deicide, Obituary, Entombed, Dark Funeral, Marduk, and other bands. I was a tattoo artist for 25 years and opened a tattoo shop in which I was mumbling death and black metal words while putting black ink in the skin of the French military. Today I am an entrepreneur.
Q2: では、そう言った場所でどういった音楽を聴いて育ってきたんですか？ 今はどんな仕事についているんでしょう？
【AROMA】: 聴いて育ったのは、METALLICA（”Black Album” の前）, CANNIBAL CORPSE, DEICIDE, OBITUARY, ENTOMBED, DARK FUNERAL, MARDUK といったようなバンドだね。
僕は25年間タトゥー・アーティストで、タトゥー・ショップを開き、フランス軍人の肌に黒いインクを入れながら、デスメタルとブラックメタルの歌詞をつぶやいていたよ。今は起業家なんだ。
Q3: I understand that you are receiving assistance from the government of French Polynesia, how did you come to receive aid?
【AROMA】: There is a strong Cultural Ministry here in Tahiti and many different types of helps are given to projects that promote Polynesian culture in different ways, such as Polynesian dancing, which is very well known in Japan, music, theatre, Polynesian tattoo conventions, seminaries.
Tuamotuan language and Polynesian percussions, and the local themes in our songs are the arguments TE RUKI proposes in order to get this help from the government. The aid is 50% of the total amount of the project. We are thankful !
Q3: TE RUKI はフランス領ポリネシアの政府から援助を受けているんですよね？
【AROMA】: タヒチには強力な文化省があって、日本でも有名なポリネシアン・ダンス、音楽、演劇、ポリネシアン・タトゥーの大会、神学校など、様々なポリネシア文化を促進するプロジェクトに多くの種類の援助が与えられているんだ。
ツアモツ語、ポリネシアン・パーカッション、そして僕たちの歌の中にあるポリネシアのテーマが、TE RUKI が政府から援助を受けられることになった理由だよ。支援金はこのプロジェクトの総額の50％。ありがたいことだね！
Q4: I know that singing in Tuamotuan is one of your key features. Were you convinced that your language fits wonderfully with metal?
【AROMA】: We didn’t have any doubts about singing in our native language. It is imagined and thought in Tuamotuan, so the way it shows up is just something natural and indeed it sounds very black metal, very tribal; Thanks for saying that it fits.
Q4: ツアモツ語は TE RUKI の音楽には欠かせない要素の一つですよね？実にメタルと親和性の高い言語ですね？
【AROMA】: 僕たちは、母国語で歌うことに何の迷いもなかったんだ。普段から、ツアモツ語で想像し、考えているんだから、それが自然に現れただけでね。
でも、たしかに僕たちの言葉にはブラックメタル的、トライバル的な響きがあるよね。ツアモツ語がメタルにフィットしてうれしいよ。
Q5: I understand that Tuamotuan has only a few thousand speakers now? From the point of view of language preservation, “Marako Te Ruki” is an important album. Does the album have any songs about gods or battles in Polynesia?
【AROMA】: Yes as a matter of fact, only 6000 people left speak Tuamotuan. In the Tuamotu islands people are speaking more French now and also Tahitian. Tuamotuan is slowly disappearing. I speak Tuamotuan when I go back to island home Fakarava.
Indeed our songs are based on Polynesian Gods: Tohitika is one of them. Mahuike is a demi-god that discovered fire, Ruahatu Is the god of seas. We have a lot of fun imagining different worlds and the place that Man has in these fantastic situations. It’s wild!
Q5: 今、世界では言語の消滅が深刻な問題となっていますよね。ツアモツ語も数千人しか話者がいない言語だと聞いています。
言語の保存という意味でも、”Marako Te Ruki” は重要なアルバムですね？
【AROMA】: そうなんだ。実は、ツアモツ語の話者は6000人しか残っていないんだ。ツアモツ諸島では現在、フランス語とタヒチ語を話す人が多くなっていて、ツアモツ語は徐々に失われつつあるんだよ。僕だってファカラヴァ島に帰るときくらいしか、ツアモツ語を話さないからね。
僕たちの歌は、ポリネシアの神々をモチーフにしている。マフイケは火を発見した半神で、ルアハツは海の神。さまざまに異なる世界と、その幻想的な状況における人間の位置づけを想像するのがとても楽しいんだよ。まさにワイルドだよね！
Q6: I understand that Tuamotuan is similar in some aspects to the Maori language, right? You also include traditional percussion on your albums, and I imagine you must be familiar with Alien Weaponry, which incorporates the Maori haka, would you agree?
【AROMA】: Yes Maori and Tuamotuan are very similar. The origins actually are the same, the source is Polynesian, The Polynesian triangle includes Hawaii, New Zealand, Rapa Nui, Tahiti and Islands are in the center of this triangle.
Tamatoa the drummer is the traditional percussion specialist. He plays in a well-known Polynesian dancing group called Hei Tahiti.
Yes, somehow we can say that we are familiar with Alien Weaponry by the incorporation of traditional elements.
Q6: ツアモツ語やその文化は、マオリのものと似ているそうですね？
あなたたちは伝統的なパーカッションも使用しますし、そういう意味では、マオリ文化やハカを取り入れた ALIEN WEAPONRY には共感をおぼえるのではないですか？
【AROMA】: そうだね。マオリ族とツアモツ族は非常によく似ているよ。ポリネシアの三角形は、ハワイ、ニュージーランド、ラパ・ヌイ、タヒチ、そしてその中心にある島々を指すんだから。
ドラムの Tamatoa は、伝統的なパーカッションのスペシャリストなんだ。Hei Tahiti という有名なポリネシアン・ダンス・グループで演奏しているくらいでね。
そう、だからポリネシアの伝統的な要素を取り入れるているという意味で、僕たちはいくらか ALIEN WEAPONRY に親しみを感じていると言えるだろうな。
Q7: Minorities have been subjected to oppression and discrimination. In recent years, there has been a growing movement to eliminate such sadness. Does this album express your hope to change the world?
【AROMA】: We understand that minorities feel so, when living in countries where they feel like strangers, with other cultural aspects and yes, it can be very sad and painful. Over here we are home, we think in Polynesian, we speak Polynesian, while connected to the whole world with all this new technology. Actually we are aware about the powerful and beautiful environment surrounding us. Our album doesn’t directly express a hope to change the world. But if each of us become conscious about each single thing we do, then a big change will occur. “Marako Te Ruki” is an album to take your mind away for a while, to take you out for a ride, to travel, to accompany your thoughts… we need to escape sometimes, it gives us space inside us, hopefully our album plays a role in that sense.
Q7: これまで、少数民族は弾圧され、差別され、搾取されることが少なくありませんでした。ただ近年では、そうした悲しみをなくしていこうという機運も高まっていますね。
あなたたちの音楽にも、そうした希望や期待は込められているのでしょうか？
【AROMA】: 少数民族の人たちが、他の文化的背景を持った “他人” のように感じる国で生活するとき、そう感じることはよくわかるし、そうそれは、とても悲しくつらいことかもしれないね。
だけど、ここでは、ポリネシア語で考え、ポリネシア語で話しながら、僕たちは新しいテクノロジーで世界中とつながれている。僕たちを取り巻くパワフルで美しい環境を実際に感じながらね。
このアルバムには、世界を変えようという希望が直接込められているわけではない。でも、僕たち一人ひとりが、ひとつひとつのことに意識を向けることで、大きな変化が起こるはずだよ。”Marako Te Ruki” は言ってみれば、しばらくの間リスナーの心を解放し、ドライブに連れ出し、旅をし、リスナーの思考に寄り添うためのアルバムなんだ。
Q8: The world now faces the specter of nuclear war once again. What do you, who have suffered greatly from nuclear tests, want to tell the world now through metal?
【AROMA】: I don’t really know what to say about Nuclear. We all know how destructive this is, and how human being is so suicidal to destroy itself in many different ways and forms. I feel that a new way of thinking is coming though. A new generation is appearing and new energies are replacing nuclear stuff. We will all die for sure but if we kill the planet earth with our nuclear shit, then it’s the proof that human being is not intelligent at all. Hopefully Elon Musk develops planet Mars before this happens (joke J)
Q8: 今、世界は再び核戦争の恐怖と向き合っています。
かつてフランス領ポリネシアは、フランスによる核実験で深刻な被害をうけたそうですが、そうした場所だからこそメタルを通して伝えたいことはありますか？
【AROMA】: 核兵器について、被害を受けた僕らは何と言ったらいいのかわからないんだ。僕たちは皆、核兵器がいかに破壊的であるか、そして人間がいかに自滅的であるか、さまざまな方法で自らを破壊していることを知っている。
だけど、僕は地球に新しい考え方が生まれつつあるとも感じているんだ。新しい世代が登場し、新しいエネルギーが原子力に取って代わりつつある。それでも、もし今、核兵器で地球を破壊してしまったら、それは人類に知性がないことの証明になるだろうな。イーロン・マスクがそうなる前に火星を開発することを願うよ（笑）。
