「僕は非常に好奇心旺盛な人間で、遠い土地への憧れを常に抱いてきたんだ。アイスランドに移住する前から長年アイスランドに夢中だった。だから、その決断は僕にとってあまりに当然のことだったね。アイスランドの驚くべき自然は、僕の音楽における最大のインスピレーションだよ。感情と世界観に次いでね」
Mario Infantes は音の旅人です。スペインに生まれた彼は、自らの好奇心と “音の羅針盤” に従って、縁もゆかりもないアイスランドに移住。その場所で音楽を作り続けています。未だ知らぬ景色や文化への憧れは、想像の翼を広げ、創造への強い衝動となり得ます。それが絶景の宝庫、アイスランドならなおさらでしょう。Sigur Ros, Solstafir, Agent Fresco, Mur…だからこそ、彼の地は異端でしかし素晴らしき音楽家の宝庫でもあるのです。そして、Mario の音楽もまた、間違いなくその絶景の一部となるはずです。

そうして Mario Infantes は、国境、言語、伝統、ステレオタイプを超えたサウンド・ジャーナル “Bitácora” で音楽の旅に出ました。まるでオペラ歌手のように卓越したボーカル・レンジと、文化の伝道師として知られる彼は、様々なバックグラウンドを持つアイスランドの著名ミュージシャンとのコラボレーションにより、豊かな音のタペストリーを織り成していきました。
スペイン語で “船の羅針盤” を意味する “Bitácora” は、メタルの生々しいエネルギー、アイスランドを中心としたヨーロッパの民族的伝統の妖しい美しさ、そしてシネマティックでの没入感のあるテクスチャーを融合させ、氷河ように絶大な音楽的風景を投影した航海へと誘います。 そのメロディーはランドマークとして、リスナーを自己実現、変革、そして共感を求める憧れの旅へと導くのです。

ウード、ハンドパン、ドゥドゥク、バンスリ、ズルナ…多様なムードとジャンルを探求する Mario Infantes は、豊かな民族音楽の伝統とメタル、そしてシンフォニックな影響を融合させ、様々な国の楽器アンサンブルを駆使しています。その結果、同じ “アヴァンギャルド” という呼称で呼ばれながらも、IGORRR や Devin Townsend とはまた異なるサウンドパレットを披露しています。その中心にあるのが、Mario の飛び抜けた歌声の素晴らしさでしょう。
スペイン語と英語、アイスランド語で歌う Mario は、マルチ・ボイス、マルチ・リンガル、マルチ・インストゥルメンタリストとしてこのプロジェクトの多様性を体現しています。彼には Einar Solberg 風の幽玄なファルセットから響き渡るテノールまでオペラ的な感性があって、Igorrr 風のグロウル、重層的なハーモニー、喉歌（またはそれに近いもの）、そしてよりパフォーマティブな声の演技（笑いの瞬間、スポークンワード、ラップ）まで、あまりにも様々な声を使い分け、使いこなします。アヴァンギャルドとは支離滅裂を意味するわけではありません。革新的でありながら、ここにあるのは心に響く流れるようなサウンド、そして真の感情。彼の音楽的な実験は、コンパスの導きによっていつも成功を収めるのです。

INTERVIEW WITH MARIO INFANTES
Q1: First, tell us what kind of music you grew up listening to.
【MARIO】: I grew up listening to Spanish rock bands, I live in Iceland since 2016 but I was born in South Spain. My parents would play the music they listened to so I grew up listening to a lot of classic Spanish rock bands like Celtas Cortos, Ska-P, Extremoduro… From there soon I transitioned to Heavy Metal, Nu Metal, etc and while metal has always been a crucial part of my life I’ve always listened to all kinds of music. I always had a fascination for folk and traditional music from all over the world, cultures that I’m not familiar with.
Q1: 本誌初登場です！まずは、あなたの音楽的なバックグラウンドからお話ししていただけますか？
【MARIO】: 僕はスペインのロック・バンドを聴いて育ったんだ。2016年からアイスランドに住んでいるけど、南スペインで生まれ育ったからね。両親が聴いていた音楽を流していたから、Celtas Cortos, Ska-P, Extremoduro など、クラシックなスペインのロック・バンドの曲をたくさん聴いて育ったんだよ。そこからすぐにヘヴィ・メタルや Nu-metal に移行したよ。メタルは常に僕の生活の一部であったけど、あらゆる種類の音楽を聴いてきたね。世界中のフォークや伝統音楽、馴染みのない文化の音楽に常に興味を持っていたんだよ。
Q2: Your singing is really as good as an opera singer’s. Do you have a classical education?
【MARIO】: Thank you but, not really, I am self taught. I just have a strong vision and I have the will to make it happen whatever it takes. I have always been attracted to the dramatism and epicness of the opera, so I started practising it from an early age.
Q2: あなたの歌声はオペラ歌手のように素晴らしいですね！クラシック音楽の教育を受けているんですか？
【MARIO】: ありがとう！だけど、実は受けていないんだ。僕はぜんぶ独学だからね。ただ、強いビジョンがあって、それを何としても実現させる意志がある。オペラのドラマティックさと壮大さに惹かれていたから、幼少期から練習を始めたんだ。
Q3: You are also a member of Cult of Lilith, but why are you making a solo album apart from that?
【MARIO】: The band has been inactive now for almost three years, when it was active the band was my main creative outlet but as soon as it went inactive I needed to refocus that creative energy, that’s how I started my solo project. Now I’m 100% focused on it and it seems like it will keep me busy until the day I die.
Q3: あなたは CULT OF LILITH のメンバーでもありますが、なぜそのバンドとは別にソロ・アルバムを作っているのですか？
【MARIO】: バンドは現在ほぼ3年間活動休止中なんだ。活動中はバンドが僕の主な創造的な表現の場だったけど、活動休止後はその創造的なエネルギーを再集中させる必要があったからね。それがソロ・プロジェクトを始めるきっかけになった。現在は100%このプロジェクトに集中していて、死ぬまで忙しくなりそうだよ 。
Q4: You have Spanish roots, why do you live in Iceland and play music there?
【MARIO】: I’m a very curious person and have always had a fascination for far lands. I was obsessed with Iceland for many years before moving there so the decision was very clear to me. I consider the incredible nature in Iceland the biggest inspiration for my music, right after my emotions and worldview.

Q5: The artwork for “Bitacora” has your face as a map. It seems to resemble the topography of Iceland. Is this a pictorial representation of your love for Iceland?
【MARIO】: Among many other things but yes, this album is probably the most meaningful work of art I’ve ever done, and Iceland plays a very important role in it. My good friend Reuben from New Delhi delivered an amazing job with this artwork. The different parts and areas of a map are a representation of the complexity of the human experience.
Q5: “Bitacora” のアートワークには、あなたの顔が地図として描かれています。アイスランドの地形に似ているように思えますが、これはアイスランドへの愛の視覚的な表現なのでしょうか？
【MARIO】: 多くの要素があるけど、このアルバムは僕がこれまで手掛けた最も意味深い芸術作品であり、アイスランドはそれに非常に重要な役割を果たしているからね。ニューデリーの友人ルーベンが、このアートワークで素晴らしい仕事をしてくれたね。地図の異なる部分や領域は、人間の経験の複雑さを表現しているよ。
Q6: Iceland is not a big country by any means, but it has produced a lot of great and innovative bands like Sigur Ros, Solstafir, Agent Fresco, Mur, and you guys!
I have an image of Icelandic bands making music that reflects their rich nature, like Volcanoes and oceans, and you guys do too, don’t you? Is Iceland’s nature a big inspiration for you?
【MARIO】: Absolutely, there’s a reason why there are so many amazing artists within such a small country. The nature is mind-blowing and so inspiring, and the winters are very long, creating art is what allows us to channel all that beauty and not lose our minds.

【MARIO】: 絶対にそうだよね。なぜなら、アイスランドという小さな国の中にこれほど多くの素晴らしいアーティストがいるのには確かな理由があるからだよ。自然は圧倒的で、非常に刺激的で、冬は長く、アートを作ることはその美しさを表現し、正気を保つための手段だといえるだろう。
Q7: Your use of traditional Icelandic instruments and musicians is an important aspect of this album. Can you tell us about Icelandic traditional music and Icelandic language its appeal?
【MARIO】: I have used instruments and languages from many different cultures in this album, and will continue to do so in the following albums. But Icelandic music, art and language will always be relevant in my work, not only because I simply happen to live there, but because I absolutely love being there and it deeply resonates with who I am.
Q7: 伝統的なアイスランドの楽器とミュージシャンをこのアルバムで起用したことも重要ですよね。アイスランドの伝統音楽とアイスランド語の魅力を教えていただけますか？
【MARIO】: このアルバムでは、多くの異なる文化の楽器と言語を使用しているし、今後のアルバムでも同様の取り組みを続けていくよ。しかし、アイスランドの音楽、芸術、言語は、僕の作品において常に重要な役割を果たすだろうね。それは単に僕がここに住んでいるからではなく、この場所を愛し、僕の本質と深く共鳴しているからなんだ。
Q8: Your music is very diverse, combining metal, traditional music, flamenco, jazz, orchestra, opera, and film music! You are often compared to Igorrr and Leprous, for example. How do you feel about being called “avant-garde” in general?
【MARIO】: I’m not sure whether my music can be labelled as such but I’m comfortable with “avant-garde”, as it represents all those artists who don’t really identify themselves with a particular genre and are not afraid to experiment and take risks.
Q8: あなたの音楽は実に多様で、メタル、伝統音楽、フラメンコ、ジャズ、オーケストラ、オペラ、映画音楽などを見事に融合させています！例えば、IGORRR や LEPROUS とよく比較されていますが、一般的に “アヴァンギャルド” と呼ばれることについて、どう感じていますか？
【MARIO】: 僕の音楽がそう呼ばれるかどうかは分からないけど、”アヴァンギャルド” という言葉には違和感はないよ。なぜなら、それは特定のジャンルに縛られず、実験やリスクを恐れないアーティストたちを象徴している言葉だからね。

MESSAGE FOR JAPAN
Well, as a matter of fact I am! I’ve had a strong relationship with Japanese culture. I practised Aikido for many years before moving to Iceland (there was only one dojo in the whole country and their Aikido line was very different from mine), and I am a Shiatsu therapist. I studied Shiatsu in the official Japanese school in Spain for 5 years with Shigeru Onoda Sensei, and I still work as a therapist here in Iceland. I love traditional Japanese music, I’m learning to play Shakuhachi and I’m trying to buy a Shamishen, but I’m waiting to visit Japan (or tour) soon and buy one when I’m there. My favourite mangaku is Junji Ito, I’ve read almost everything he’s worked on. And I’m a big fan of videogames, I mostly play PC games but my favourite console will always be SNES. I’d like to use the opportunity to say that I am very much willing to play shows in Japan, and get to know its fascinating culture with my own eyes!

それに伝統的な日本の音楽が大好きで、尺八を習い始めていて、三味線を購入しようと考えているけど日本を訪れる（またはツアーで回る）のを待っているんだ。そこで購入する予定だよ。僕の好きな漫画家は伊藤潤二で、彼が手掛けた作品はほとんど全て読んでいる。また、ビデオゲームの大ファンで、主にPCゲームをやっているけど、最も好きなコンソールはスーパーファミコンだよ。この機会を利用して、ぜひとも日本でライブをやりたいと伝えておきたいね！
