プログレッシブメタルコアのモーゼ、SHOKRAN はジャンルを約束の土地へと導く預言者なのかも知れません。ロシアから世界を窺う指導者は、文字通り天上の美を体現する最新作 “Ethereal” で海を割ります。
ギタリスト Dmitry Demyanenko のソロプロジェクトとして始まった SHOKRAN は、デビューフル “Supreme Truth” で BORN OF OSIRIS の革新にオリエンタルで壮大なサウンドスケープをもたらし、遅れて来た “Djent スター” として一躍脚光を浴びました。
リリース後にはボーカル、リズムギター、ベーシストの脱退という非常事態に見舞われますが、グレードアップしたメンバー、さらにキーボーディストを加え盤石の体制でセカンドアルバム “Exodus” をドロップします。
そうしてバンドは旧約聖書に記された “出エジプト記” をテーマとしたコンセプト作品で、シンセサイザーの煌びやかな響きと、一際エクレクティックなビジョンを携え自らのオリエンタルドラマティックなサウンドを確立することとなったのです。
最新作 “Ethereal” は、メロディーと多様でプログレッシブな方向性をさらに追求し、バンドのドラマ性を飛躍的に高めたマイルストーンです。
「確かにこのアルバムでオリエンタルな要素は減ったと思うよ。だけどコンポジションはより成熟を遂げているね。つまり、僕たちはよりプログレッシブに、Djent の要素を減らして進化を果たしたんだ！」レジェンド THE HAARP MACHINE にも請われて参加することとなったシーンきってのシンガー Andrew Ivashchenko が語るように、典型的な Djent サウンドやあからさまなオリエンタルフレーズを減退させ、”エセリアル” なムードを研ぎ澄ますことで、アルバムは結果として唯一無二のダイナミズム、エピック世界を得ることとなりました。
実際、冷ややかで透明なリードギターとシンセサイザーの景色、ミステリアスなオリエンタルフレーズ、複雑でメカニカルなグルーヴ、スポークンワード、クリーン、グロウルを自在に行き来する声の表現力、全てで荘厳を体現したオープナー “Unbodied” がバンドの DNA をしっかりと受け継ぐ一方で、”Ascension” のサウンドスケープは完璧なコントラストを創出します。
「”Ascension” はアルバムで最も多様な楽曲さ。まさにドラマさ。緩やかに実にメロディックに始まり、メロディーが躍動し始め、アグレッションが加わり、ハッピーなコーラスが流れ出し、突如ヘヴィネスで期待を激しく裏切るんだ。まさに楽曲で最もドラマティックな瞬間だね。そうしてドラマを繰り返し、感情をもたらす訳さ！」Andrew の言葉通り、多幸感や神秘性を抱きしめた夢見心地の崇高美は、メジャー感を伴って SHOKRAN 劇場の素晴らしきアクセントとなっていますね。
そうして SHOKRAN が描く多次元の自己探求は、DREAM THEATER からハチャトリアンまで Tech-metal の粋を尽くした “Superior”、PERIPHERY や MONUMENTS の最新作にも通じるキャッチーさとヘヴィーグルーヴの対比を封じた “Golden Pendant” と、まさにマルチディメンショナルな世界観を提示していくのです。
幕引きは “Destiny Crucified”。ロシアの血が育んだ絶対零度のメランコリーは、ストリングスやアコースティックの蜃気楼を写しながら夢幻泡影のワルツを踊るのです。

INTERVIEW WITH ANDREW IVASHCHENKO
Q1: This is the first interview with you. So, at first, could youtell us about the band and yourself? What kind of music were you listening to, when you were growing up?
【ANDREW】: Nice to meet you, Sin! Hello, dear readers of Marunouchi Muzik Magazine!
Andrew from the Inter national progressive metal band Shokran is today on the line! Some of you could be already related with the band’s «Supreme Truth» and «Exodus» albums, and now we have just released our new record called «Ethereal».
Short story: The band started up from the one-man band, formed by guitarist/composer Dmitry Demyanenko. After he released the first EP «Sixth Sense», the decision was made to make the full band. Not a long time after that the first LP album, «Supreme Tuth» has been released and it actually gave the band the first breath. Shokran kept growing and gaining the fanbase over the world.
Q1: 本誌初登場です！まずはバンドのバックグラウンドについてお話していただけますか？
【ANDREW】: やあ、Marunouchi Muzik Magazine 読者のみんな！今日はインターナショナルプログレッシブメタルバンド SHOKRAN の Andrew がお相手するよ。すでにバンドの過去作 “Supreme Truth”, “Exodus” を聴いてくれた人もいると思うんだけど、遂に最新作 “Ethereal” をリリースしたよ。
もともとバンドは、ギタリストでコンポーザー Dmitry Demyanenko のワンマンバンドとして始まったんだ。彼は最初の EP “Six Sense” をリリースした後、このプロジェクトをフルバンドにする決断を下したね。それから間もなくして、ファーストアルバム “Supreme Truth” がリリースされたんだ。このアルバムこそがバンドに生命が宿った瞬間だったね。
それ以来、SHOKRAN は成長を続けているし、世界中にファンベースを築いているよ。
Q2: After “Supreme Truth”, there was a big change in the band. Actually, you joined Shokran at that time. What happened to the band? Do you think Shokran’s music have changed since then?
【ANDREW】: A year later the album was released, the band parted ways with the original singer and i tried myself in an audition from another country (I should notice that we all are practicing in our homes, cause the distances between all of us counts in a thousands km), and joined the band right after. Shokran changed, but i believe this change is for the best. We became more diverse, we can deliver the bigger spectre of emotions now, we all matured and became the one working organism.
Q2: “Supreme Truth” をリリースした後、バンドに大きな変化が起こりましたね？実際、あなたもその時バンドに加入した訳ですが。
【ANDREW】: “Supreme Truth” をリリースした一年後、オリジナルシンガーがバンドを離れてね。それで僕は、別の国からだけど (Andrew はウクライナ出身) オーディションを受けてみようと思ったんだ。
僕たちが住んでいる場所は何千キロも離れているから、練習は別々に家でしなくちゃならないことには気づくべきだったね。とにかく、そうしてバンドに加わったんだよ。
SHOKRAN は確かに変わったけど、これは最良の変化だと信じているよ。僕たちはより多様になったし、今では大きな感情の変化を音楽で表現出来るんだ。僕たちは成熟を遂げ、集団として働けるようになったのさ。
Q3: Maybe, Aria is the most popular metal band in Russia. But they are old school. What’s like playing modern prog/metal in Russia and Ukrina? How is the scene?
【ANDREW】: Yes, Aria is the most popular old school heavy metal band here for sure.
But overall, prog metal scene here is very underground, so there’s not much happening in Russian prog indusry)
Q3: おそらく、ロシアでは ARIA が最も有名なメタルバンドだと思いますが、彼らはオールドスクールです。ロシアのモダンプログやモダンメタルの状況はいかがですか？
【ANDREW】: うん、確かに ARIA はロシアで最も人気のあるオールドスクールなメタルバンドだよ。
だけど、全体的に見て、ロシアのプログメタルシーンはとてもアンダーグラウンドだよ。だから、ロシアのプログシーンに大きな何かが起こることは期待出来ないね。
Q4: So, Andrew, you were making The Haarp Machine’s new record along with Shokran’s “Ethereal”. Really busy, right? haha. We know The Haarp Machine have been in hiatus for a long time and Al has been searching for new members. How did you join the band?
【ANDREW】: It became more busy in April 2018 when Al called meand asked if i’d like to join THM. We decided to record one song + the music video while i was working on Shokran’s album and to continue working on THM’s album right after. So as «Ethereal» came out, now i continue to work on THM stuff.
Q4: あなたは SHOKRAN の新作と並行して THE HAARP MACHINE の新作にも関わっていましたよね？ 実に忙しそうですね？(笑)
THE HAARP MACHINE の Al Mu’minは長い間新しいメンバーを探していましたが、どういった経緯で加入に至ったのですか？
【ANDREW】: 忙しさが増したのは、2018年の4月に Al から電話で THE HAARP MACHINE に加入しないかと誘われてからだね。それで僕たちは、1曲のレコーディングとミュージックビデオの制作を決めたんだ。SHOKRAN のアルバムを作っている最中にね。そうしてその後、THE HAARP MACHINE で継続してアルバムも制作することになったんだ。
だから、”Ethereal” がリリースされても、THE HAARP MACHINE のアルバム制作で引き続き忙しいんだ。
Q5: What was the experience working with Al and The Haarp Machine? What’s like The Haarp Machine’s new record?
【ANDREW】: The new record is deverse! It has that vibe “Esoteric Agenda” had, but more improved, there are heavy songs as well as more melodic in there.
Q5: THE HAARP MACHINE の新作はどういった作品になりそうですか？
【ANDREW】: 新しいレコードは、一言で言えば実に多様だよ！”Esoteric Agenda” が持っていたヴァイブを引き継ぎながら、より改良され、よりメロディックな楽曲が存在するよ。もちろん、同時にヘヴィーな楽曲もね。
Q6: OK, let’s talk about “Ethereal”. First of all, what made you choose “Ethereal” for the title? Is there any concept or lyrical themes on the album?
【ANDREW】: Of Course! All of our previous works were conceptual: Egyptian Mythology on Supreme Truth, 10 Plagues of Egypt on Exodus. The new album is conceptual as well! This time we have the main character that struggles in self-searching process, and finds so much inside power in the different realities. In the one of his multi dimensional wanderings he realizes himself ‘as great as a God’. Golden Pendant’s lyrics will guide you through this moment!
Q6: では、”Ethereal” について掘り下げましょう。アートワークも印象的ですが、まずは作品のコンセプトや歌詞のテーマについて教えていただけますか？
【ANDREW】: もちろん！僕たちの以前の作品は全てコンセプトアルバムだったね。”Supreme Truth” ではエジプト神話を、”Exodus” では古代エジプトの十の災いについて扱ったんだ。そして新作も同様にコンセプトアルバムだよ！
今回僕たちは、自分探しに苦悩するキャラクターを描いたんだ。そして彼は、異なる現実で多くの内なる力に目覚めるんだよ。多次元世界の一つで、彼は自身が神にも等しいほど偉大であることに気づくんだ。”Golden Pendant” の歌詞を読めば、その瞬間がより理解出来るはずさ！
Q7: “Oriental” is one of your essential aspect, I think. But “Ascention” is typically, it seems oriental aspect decreasedin “Ethereal” and it becomes more catchy, pop record, do you agree that?
【ANDREW】: We make the music we love, that is our essential aspect for sure!) I cannot say «Ascention» is typical, it’s the most diverse song on this album. It’s the actual drama. Begins from a slow and very melodic, comes to action but still melodic, adds more aggression, then flows to a melodic and happy sounding chorus, blows your expectations with the heaviness, then-the most drama on the song, and again and again. It delivers the Feels!
Yes, Oriental elements decreased in this album. But the compositions matured, we’ve gone more progressive, less djent!
Q7: “オリエンタル” な要素は、SHOKRAN にとって欠かせないものの一つだと思いますが、”Ascension” が象徴するように今作ではそのムードが減退し、よりメロディックでキャッチーな一面が強調されているようにも思えます。
【ANDREW】: 僕たちはただ愛する音楽を作るだけだよ。それこそが欠かせない要素さ！”Ascension” はアルバムで最も多様な楽曲さ。まさにドラマさ。

Q8: I love the melancholy of “Destiny Crucified”. I feel it has a mood of Russian traditional music. Do you think Shokran have influenced by Russian traditional music somehow?
【ANDREW】: Thank you! Actually i wouldn’t say that, but maybe it’s somehow inside of us) The traditions, the feelings of the old russian music) But i cannot say Shokran influenced by it at all.
Q8: “Destiny Crucified” のメランコリーは素晴らしいですね！ロシアの伝統音楽にも通じるように感じましたが？
【ANDREW】: ありがとう！意図的にそうした訳じゃないんだけど、きっと伝統音楽や昔のロシアの音楽が、いくらかは僕たちの中に自然と根付いているんだろうな。だから全く影響がないとは言えないよ。

For Dmitry, The most ‘contrast’ album after listening to Aria back in the day was Dream Theater’s «Black Clouds & Silver Linings», for me it was maybe «Meteora» by Linkin Park – i felt in love with the driveand the saturation of the rock music back then, self-named album by Animals as Leaders turned my head into the progressive metal world back in 2010. Tesseract’s «Concealing Fate» helped me to widen myhorizons and finally, Shokran’s Exodus managed to change my life physically)
Dmitry にとって、ARIA を聴いていた当時、最も “対照的” で驚かされたのが DREAM THEATER の “Black Clouds & Silver Linings” だったんだ。
僕の人生を変えたアルバムは、おそらく LINKIN PARK の “Meteora” だろうな。あの作品で色鮮やかなロックミュージックに恋に落ちたんだ。
ANIMALS AS LEADERS のセルフタイトルは、2010年に僕をプログメタルワールドに向かわせてくれたアルバムだね。TesseracT の “Concealing Fate” はその地平を拡げる手助けとなったよ。
そうして、SHOKRAN の “Exodus” が物理的に僕の人生を変えてくれたんだ。
