NEW DISC REVIEW + INTERVIEW 【PARADISE LOST : OBSIDIAN】

EXCLUSIVE: INTERVIEW WITH AARON AEDY OF PARADISE LOST !!

“You Have To Follow Your Heart And Soul Or Else You Can Sound a Little Dishonest With Your Craft. I Think If We Had The Mentality Of “Draconian Times Did Well, Let’s Make Another One!”, We Would Have Probably Split Up With The Following Years As It Would Have Felt Empty And Void Of Soul.”

DISC REVIEW “OBSIDIAN”

PARADISE LOST “OBSIDIAN” : 10/10

INTERVIEW WITH AARON AEDY

Q1: First of all, it’s really hard time now due to the coronavirus especially for the music industry. As a musician, and as a person, how do you spend your corona crisis days? What are your thoughts on the current global situation?

【AARON】: I’ve found myself revisiting rudiments musically I haven’t touched upon some since the 90’s, so I’ve been re-schooling myself and practicing a lot of things. I’m also trying to learn new things which have killed a lot of time such as doing courses online, learning how to use some of my software more effectively, walks with my wife and gaming. There are some TV shows too, but not too many.

Q2: Except for drummers, Paradise Lost’s line-up has remained stable for such a long-standing metal band. What’s the glue that keeps you together?

【AARON】: I think a mutual love of the same things – especially comedy and friendship. I think there has to be a lot of give and take and understanding in bands which has to be across the board to work. It isn’t always easy, but you have to find ways to make it work, like everything in life and for the greater good etc. Also, it’s important over the years to know when someone wants an arm around their shoulder, support or space.

Q2: PARADISE LOST

Q3: For 90’s metal kids like me, your revolutionary records like “Gothic” “Icon” “Draconian Times” are definitely bibles. What made you decide to mix the gothic aspect into death/doom metal?

【AARON】: It was simply our love of both styles of music. There was a huge Goth scene in the north of England where we are from and growing up as metal fans too, it made sense. The darker sides of both come together beautifully for us and it was also nice to be doing something a little different to our peers.

Q4: You are most definitely a pioneer of gothic metal. Even bands in the same generation as you like My Dying Bride, Anathema, Katatonia, Amorphis cited you as influence. At that time, did you have the feeling that you are driving the movement and having an impact on other bands?

【AARON】: It wasn’t really something we thought about – we were just young men finding our own way and trying to make something we loved and enjoyed. It’s a massive compliment when anyone cites you as an influence or an inspiration, as that’s what music should drive in all of us, and especially with all of the bands being such good friends too. It’s awesome. They all got inspired to make their own music and follow their own channels which is wonderful.

Q5: Regarding the 90’s, you shifted your musical direction to more electronica like Depeche Mode in “One Second”. Of course, lots of metalheads were surprised about that “change”. Looking back now, do you think that musical evolution was right at that time?

【AARON】: Of course, as the ethos with Paradise Lost has always been making music for our own pleasure first and foremost. You have to follow your heart and soul or else you can sound a little dishonest with your craft. I think if we had the mentality of “Draconian Times did well, let’s make another one!”, we would have probably split up with the following years as it would have felt empty and void of soul.
I think music always need to make you excited to wake up the next day on tour, or wherever, and be looking forward to doing it. After a pretty intense four years of Icon and Draconian Times writing, recording and heavy touring, with little home time and being utterly consumed by the beast, we needed a change to survive. It has proven to bear fruit as here we are 25 years later still loving our profession and Paradise Lost itself.

「”Draconian Times”

Q6: No other band keeps producing great works every two or three years like you do, and your newest record “Obsidian” is a masterpiece among them. I feel it returns to your roots of early 90’s gothic metal, but also you mixed your more recent dark and death/doomy reimagined soundscapes. Would you agree with that?

【AARON】: I think it’s very much a Paradise Lost record, which sounds glib, but I think we’ve very much found our own sound and with so much variety within our style over the last 32 years, we’ve got a wide tapestry of misery to draw from! Haha. I do think it is a pretty good representation of what Paradise Lost has been over time, and thank you for the compliment!

Q7: “Ghosts” is very impressive moment in this record. Definitely, you explored the gothic world of bands like Sisters of Mercy. I feel it represents the maturity or diversity of Paradise Lost now. Would you agree?

【AARON】: It’s a song I’m personally very much looking forward to playing live as it’s a personal favourite too. Greg can write a good Goth tune when he’s in the mood for sure!

Q8: Regarding eclectic, modern metal bands like Deafheaven, Pallbearer, Alcest and Gojira are trying to take metal another realm recently. Are there any new bands that you are really into these days?

【AARON】: In fairness, there are some amazing bands trying to push the boundaries. All the bands above are doing really well at finding their own niche and voice in this wonderful and expanding scene. Most recently I’ve seen Pallbearer and Alcest, but Gojira I’ve seen at festivals we’ve played a number of times over the years. They always put on an amazing show and are well worth their accolades.

FIVE SONGS/ALBUMS THAT CHANGED AARON’S LIFE

NILSSON “WITHOUT YOU”

His version of this song, I first heard in the mid-70’s. It had come out a few years before but at this one particular point, I was 6 I think and it was the first time I listened and understood the lyrics. I can picture the moment even now when I was stood in the front room of my parents house in Huddersfield – I just stopped what I was doing and stood still and listened to the song; I got those tingles even now again thinking about it. Besides singing along with nursery rhyme type songs not knowing what I was singing when I was younger, I got it. It’s still a very powerful moment for me, and typically an emotionally dark song. This was the first clue! Haha.

ELO “MR. BLUE SKY”

This is still my go to song when on a flight that hits turbulence! It is so catchy, so well crafted and impossible to be miserable during it (thus the turbulence song, haha). The orchestral part of the song is a huge highlight and so left of centre for the rest of the song. It is admiral when artists surprise you like that.

KILLING JOKE “LOVE LIKE BLOOD”

Probably the start of my love of Goth punk music. It’s still amazing to this day and they still sound incredible live – such a great mixture of musicians and Geordie’s guitar playing is so unique, he’s a wizard! Jazz is an incredible front man, very intense and that voice…brilliant. I always try to see them when they play London, along with The Damned. They’re gigs I always get excited to see.

IRON MAIDEN “NUMBER OF THE BEAST”

This song / album is probably the biggest reason I’m here today typing this interview! I saw the video on Top of the Pops in March 1982 and the next day, I swapped all my Ska records with my friends big brother for Rush – Farewell to Kings (still in my top 5 of all time) and a couple of other albums. Matt “Tuds” Archer, Paradise Lost’s original drummer and my oldest friend, sat behind me at school from the age of 11. He had some rock albums, so the next day after school we went to his house and he lent me MSG – One Night at Budokan (Massive Michael Schenker fan still from that day), Motorhead – Iron Fist and KISS – Alive II. What a great start! Motorhead are still one of my faves of all time too and this all started my long standing love of metal.

METALLICA “RIDE THE LIGHTNING”

James Hetfield is such a massive influence on me as a rhythm guitarist, and an incredible band. The first time I heard them really upped the game of metal records since then for me, leading through the thrash and hardcore records I loved in the mid to late 80’s into death metal and beyond.

James Hetfield

Right, I need an honourable mentions list if that’s okay, as 5 is waaaay too short, haha.
Slayer – Reign in Blood
Portishead – Portishead
The Cult – Love
The Damned – Machine Gun Etiquette
Killing Joke – most albums
King Diamond – Abigail (and the rest as well as Mercyful Fate)
The Scorpions (so many amazing songs and albums)
Candlemass – Epicus Doomicus Metallicus (massive record for myself and PL)
Celtic Frost – Into the Pandemonium (also the first four Trouble albums)
Depeche Mode (most of them)
Finally, one of the best albums of the 21st century so far for me:
Midlake – The Courage of Others: Listened to almost too much of that album.
