Legendary Vocalist, Jeff Scott Soto Talks About Japan Tour With Kuni, Talisman, Yngwie Malmsteen, And More !!

“A GUIDE TO JEFF SCOTT SOTO”

Jeff Scott Soto。Yngwie Malmsteen のバンド RISING FORCE の初代シンガーとして華々しくシーンに登場した唯一無二のボーカリストは、ソロとしては勿論、TALISMAN, JOURNEY, W.E.T. など数多のバンド、プロジェクトでその際立った才能を発揮し続けて来ました。ソウルフルでエモーショナル、”黒い”感覚を保持しながらも、キャッチーな歌メロに絶妙なボーカルハーモニーを乗せる、彼独特の個性は常にハードロックシーンを牽引して来たと言えますね。
同時に、Jeff はオフィシャルメンバーとしてではなく、ゲスト的な立ち位置で素晴らしい作品に貢献し続けた引く手あまたな人物でもあります。Axel Rudi Pell, Alex Masi, Vinnie Vincent, TAKARA などの名作群を懐かしく思うファンも多いでしょう。
80年代に、世界で勝負したマスクマン、日本人ギタリスト Kuni の 2nd アルバム “Lookin’ For Action” も、彼の参加でグレードが上がったアルバムの1枚です。
Billy Sheehan をはじめ、多数の豪華なゲストとともに制作されたデビュー作 “Masque” とは一味違い、固定されたメンバーで勝負した作品で、SLAUGHTER の秀才 Dana Strum プロデュースの下、Jeff のソウルフルな歌唱は勿論、Kuni のツボを得たフレージングの良さ、B’z でもお馴染み Mike Terrana のキレの良いドラムスを味わうことが出来る秀作でしたね。
そして今回、Kuni のデビュー30周年を祝い Loud Park 16 出演が決定、Jeff の参加もアナウンスされました。メンバーは、Kuni, Jeff に加えて GREAT WHITE の Tony Montana, HAREM SCAREM でお馴染み Darren Smith と実に豪華。素晴らしいショーになることでしょう。
今回インタビューを行った Jeff にとっては何と23年振りの来日となります。23年！最後の来日は、1993年の TALISMAN 初来日まで遡らなければなりません。しかし、インタビューで Jeff が語ってくれた通り、TALISMAN の音楽はその長い期間、世代を超えて引き継ぐべきものだと思います。
今は亡き Marcel Jacob というベースの名手にして優れた作曲家が存在したこと、Jeff と Marcel の素晴らしきケミストリー、爽快で、キャッチーで、ファンキーで、複雑なサウンド、その全てが忘れ去られてしまうには惜し過ぎると感じています。Jeff はインタビューで、意外にも Marcel 抜きの TALISMAN の未来に前向きな発言をしてくれました。勿論、ファンにはビッグニュースでしょうし、キッズのためにもぜひ実現してほしいと思います。
また同時に、彼自身の新しいバンド SOTO にも強く力を入れていることが伝わりますね。個人的な感想を述べれば、SOTO の新作 “Divak” はダークでヘヴィー、確かに若干メロディーが弱いものの、楽器陣が想像以上にテクニシャン揃いで、これからの活動に期待が出来そうです。今回の来日が契機となり、TALISMAN や SOTO でも、再度彼の姿を日本で見ることが出来るようになるかも知れませんね！
Jeff は Yngwie との現在の関係についても語ってくれました。メロディックハードの歴史の登場です。どうぞ！！

【INTERVIEW WITH JEFF SCOTT SOTO】

Q1: Hi, Jeff! Finally, our dream will come true! Loud Park 2016 and Kuni’s solo concert are announced. 23 years have passed since the last time you came to Japan as Talisman. 23 years! How are you feeling now? Could you tell us about the memories of Japan?

【JEFF】: Believe me, I am just as disappointed that its taken this long to finally return to Japan, I am so thankful that Kuni was booked at Loud Park and asked me to join him. I truly hope to re-open doors for returning more frequently especially with SOTO next time! I have incredible memories of my times there but yes, 23 years is a long time and those memories seem like a lifetime ago. I am SO happy to return in a few weeks!

Q1: Jeff、遂に Loud Park 2016 で23年振りの来日が決定しましたね！23年です！

【JEFF】: 信じて欲しいんだけど、僕は日本に戻るのに、こんなにも長くかかってしまって本当に残念に思っているんだ。Kuni が Loud Park に出演を決めて、僕に声をかけてくれたことにとても感謝しているよ。そして、今回の来日でもう1度”ドア”が開いて、次は特に Soto で来ることが出来ればと心から望むよ。
日本には信じられないような良い思い出があるんだよ。だけど、23年は長かったね。日本の思い出は前世でのことのように思えるよ。後何週間かで戻れるんだ。とても嬉しいよ！

Q2: So, how did Kuni’s reunion come to be? Are you acquainted with Tony Cardenas and Darren James Smith?

【JEFF】: Kuni just reached out to me and asked if I would do it, the timing couldn’t be better as I tour annually with the Trans-Siberian Orchestra but we start in Nov so we just managed to squeeze in this appearance. At 1st I was discouraged we were performing with no other members of the Looking For Action lineup but as I know Tony & Darren very well, I knew this would also make for an incredible show with these caliber players..

Q2: 今回の KUNI リユニオンはどのように始まったのですか？

【JEFF】: Kuni が連絡をくれて、やれるかどうか聞いてきたんだよ。タイミングとしては良いものではなかったね。というのも、その時期僕は毎年 TRANS-SIBERIAN ORCHESTRA とツアーを行っているからね。だけど、開始は11月だから、何とか都合をつけることが出来たんだ。
正直、最初はガッカリしたんだよね。”Lookin’ For Action” のラインナップが僕以外誰もいなかったから。だけど、Tony も Darren もとても良いプレイヤーだと知っているし、このラインナップでも驚異的なショーになると悟ったのさ。

Q3: Have you decided Set-list yet? Do you have a plan to play Yngwie, Talisman, and your solo songs?

【JEFF】: Haha, this is Kuni’s show, all selections are made by him and reflect on his career! We are there to celebrate his career, my chance to celebrate my own comes later!

Q3: セットリストはもう決めてありますか？ Yngwie や TALISMAN, あなたのソロアルバムの楽曲も期待しているファンは多いと思いますが。

【JEFF】: はは (笑)。これは Kuni のショーだから、全てのセレクションは彼によるもので、彼のキャリアを反映したものになるよ！僕達は彼のキャリアを祝うために集まるんだ。僕自身の機会は後に訪れるよ！

Q4: You’ve just released “Divak” in your main band Soto. I think Soto focuses on your dark and heavy side. It’s the opposite of your another band W.E.T. What made you write such a dark mood record?

【JEFF】: It’s not so much a dark mood album as much as it is a reflection of things that are real in my life or have surrounded me the last 10 years. In life there are many ups and downs and sometimes when the downs outweigh the ups, its difficult to write songs about sunshine and happiness. But also, I felt I had not done a true metal album in years and the best way to do this is with a group, not a solo album. SOTO is a band, a metal band, a band where I can do heavier music I truly miss but also, lyrically does not work well with sunshine and walks on the beach!

Q4: あなた自身のメインアクト、SOTO では新作 “Divak” をリリースしましたね！あなたの別プロジェクト W.E.T に対して、ダークでヘヴィーなアルバムだと感じました。

【JEFF】: “Divak” はここ10年の、僕の実生活や僕の周辺を反映した作品なんだ。それを考えれば、そこまでダークなムードとも言えないんじゃないかな。人生には良い事も悪い事もあって、時には悪い事が良い事を上回ることもあるね。そういう時には、サンシャインとハッピネスについて書くことは難しいよ。
まあ、それと同時に、ここ何年か、僕は真のメタルアルバムを作っていないと感じていたこともあるね。そしてそれはソロではなく、グループでなければ作れないんだよ。SOTO はメタルバンドだよ。本当に飢えていたヘヴィーな音楽を表現出来るバンドさ。ギラギラの太陽の下浜辺を歩くなんて歌詞は全くハマらないだろ？

Q5: Anyway, 7 years have passed since Marcel Jacob’s pass away. I really loved great chemistry and friendship between you and Marcel. Could you introduce Marcel to Japanese young fans?

【JEFF】: I feel Talisman has a lot of music that will transcend through generations, he was a gifted writer and musician but more important, he agreed with me that we didn’t want to make the same album every time we recorded so he took chances with me. A lot of people favor the 1st 2 albums but we knew for us to grow, especially not be bored with the band, we had to take risks and I loved him for that. I miss this guy tremendously, I don’t know if I’ll ever do another Talisman album without him but if I do, it has to be an album we would have done together, not just use the name to make money from!

Q5: Marcel が亡くなって7年が経ちました。あなたと Marcel の間には本当に素晴らしいケミストリー、友情が存在しましたね。若いファンに Marcel を紹介していただけますか？

【JEFF】: TALISMAN は世代を超えて引き継ぐべき音楽だと感じているよ。Marcel は才能のあるライターで、ミュージシャンだった。だけど、もっと重要なのは、彼も同意してくれたんだけど、僕達は同じようなアルバムを1枚も作らなかったことなんだよ。彼は僕とリスクを犯し続けてくれたんだ。
多くの人は、1st や 2nd アルバムがフェイバリットだろう。だけど、僕達は成長出来ると知っていたし、特に、退屈なバンドにはなりたくなかったんだ。リスクを犯す必要があったし、その点で彼が大好きだったね。
Marcel がいなくて本当に本当に寂しいよ。TALISMAN が彼抜きで、これからアルバムを作るかどうかは分からないけど、もし作るとしたら、彼と一緒に作って来たようなアルバムにしなくてはならないね。ただお金のために名前を使うだけじゃなくね！

Q6: Talisman reunited in 2014 but did one-off show at Sweden Rock Festival. So, lot’s of fans will be excited about you refer to the possibility of Talisman’s reunion!

【JEFF】: For me its great fun reuniting with the guys and playing our legacy but everyone is SO busy and to get us all free for any real length of time will take proper planning. At the moment, there are no plans for anything further but I do hope we will agree to some more in the future.

Q6: TALISMAN は2014年に Sweden Rock Festival でリユニオンショーを行いましたが、1度きりと伝わってきていました。あなたが TALISMAN の新作の可能性に言及したことは、ファンにはビッグニュースですよ！

【JEFF】: 僕にとって、彼らとリユニオンを行って、僕達の遺産をプレイするのはとても楽しいんだよ。だけど、みんな本当に忙しくて、適切な計画を練るための充分な自由な時間が取れないんだよ。
今のところ、何も計画はないんだけど、将来的には全員が納得して何かやれたらと望んでいるんだ。

Q7: Yngwie Malmsteen released new album “World on Fire” this year. OK, he is singing now…Do you get in touch with him recently? What’s your thought about his recent records?

【JEFF】: I have no contact with him since Marcel’s passing, there seemed to be a lot of unfinished business with those two and I was somehow caught in the middle of it. At this point, I think the only way we’ll speak again is if he reaches out to me which seems unlikely.

Q7: Yngwie Malmsteen は今年、新作 “World on Fire” をリリースしました。今では彼自身が歌っていますね…最近彼とコンタクトを取りましたか？

【JEFF】: Marcel が亡くなってから、コンタクトは取ってないよ。彼ら2人の間には、未解決のビジネスが沢山あったんだよ。僕は何というか、2人の間で板挟みのような形になっていたんだ。
今の時点では、僕と Yngwie がまた話すようになるには、彼が連絡をしてくるというのが唯一の方法だろう。起こりそうもないけどね。

Q8: Speaking of Yngwie, you’ve played with lot’s of guitarists in your career. Who has the best chemistry with you?

【JEFF】: My current lead guitarist Jorge Salan probably has the best chemistry with me…he is incredible as both a musician and friend, bandmate and performer. Yes, I have been through a lot with many but I feel very at home and assured with Jorge!

Q8: Yngwie と言えば、あなたはキャリアを通じて、多くのギタリストと共演してきましたね。その中で、最も良いケミストリーを感じたのは誰ですか？

【JEFF】: 今のリードギタリスト、Jorge Salan がおそらく僕と最高のケミストリーを持っているだろうね。ミュージシャン、友人、バンドメイト、パフォーマー、どれを取っても驚異的なんだ。
確かに沢山のギタリストとプレイして来たけど、Jorge にはまるで家にいるかのような安心感を感じるよ！

遂に日本に戻れて本当に嬉しいよ。今回の来日で、何年も前に存在した、僕と日本の愛情に再び火がついたらいいなあと思っているよ。日本のファンがもう1度僕を迎える準備が出来ていたら嬉しいし、これからは来日が当たり前のようになればと望んでいるんだ。長い間、愛情を持って応援してくれてありがとう！
