“Maybe I Am a Working Guitar Man, So I Always Get To Play Different Kinds Of Music, That Really Influences Me So Much, So That’s Why My Music Is More Diverse.”
DISC REVIEW “NAKA”
“Splash!” DREAM THEATER にポルカやマカロニウエスタンを移植する “Dance of Awakening The Spirit Part II, The Ballad of The Headless Horseman” の大胆不敵。
EXCLUSIVE: INTERVIEW WITH NICK DISALVO OF ELDER !!
“I’d Like To Think That We’re Channeling The Adventurous And Explorative Spirit Of The Prog Scene In The 70’s, But Not Directly The Sound. We Want To Be Our Own Band, But Also Push The Boundaries Of Our Own Creativity.”
EXCLUSIVE: INTERVIEW WITH JON COURTNEY OF PURE REASON REVOLUTION !!
“First Time Labelled “Prog Rock” I Think We Were a Little Surprised. For Us It Was Mix Of Grunge, Fleetwood Mac Vox, Floyd, Massive Attack & DJ Shadow. So To Get Labelled With What Was Just a Small Section Of The Influences Felt a Little Odd. Now We’re Proud To Be Progressive.”
DISC REVIEW “EUPNEA”
SITHU AYE’S TOP 10 ANIMES AND THEIR MUSIC TO GET YOU THROUGH SELF-ISOLATION
I’ve been asked by Sin-san to do a quick write up about my top ten animes and their music to hopefully give you something to watch during COVID-19 self-isolation and quarantine. Thinking off of the top my head, my top ten probably changes a lot depending on how I feel and what I’ve watched recently, but it should include some older and more modern classics, as well as a mix of things I’ve really enjoyed watching. Hopefully you can find something new to watch in this list, or maybe re-watch something you haven’t in a while. With that all said and done, on to the list (consisting of things I’ve watched) in no particular order!
1. Cowboy Bebop (カウボーイビバップ, 1998, Sunrise)
I doubt any of you will have not heard of Cowboy Bebop, but in my eyes and the eyes of many others, it is an absolute classic and a masterpiece of Japanese animation. What Cowboy Bebop does so well is transcend the medium of anime, making it feel like its own piece of unique art. Following the motley crew of Spike Spiegel, Faye Valentine and gang, the show starts off loosely as a space western, with each episode telling its own unique story before the main narrative about Spike’s past masterly gets woven into the story.
Aside from how amazing the show is, the opening theme Tank! is iconic, as is the rest of the music in the show all composed by the incredible Yoko Kanno. What makes the show even more special is that every episode is related to a musical theme and somehow the plot of the episode and the music all tie together to create a cohesive whole. If you’ve not watched Cowboy Bebop, set aside some time and do so, because it is an absolute must watch in my opinion.
Another anime classic, Neon Genesis Evangelion was probably the show that got me to take anime seriously as a medium. It’s hard to appreciate it now with many dark and psychological anime that have been released since, but Evangelion was both ground-breaking and subversive. Most giant robot, or mecha, shows at the time were about defeating the bad guys as the good guys, but Evangelion changed all of that. The brainchild of legendary director Hideaki Anno, we follow Shinji Ikari and his descent into turmoil and anguish as the pilot of Eva Unit-01 as is forced to try to save the world while also trying to learn to live with himself as a person. Other iconic characters include Rei Ayanami, Asuka Langley Soryu and Gendo Ikari.
The opening theme for Evangelion, A Cruel Angel’s Thesis (残酷な天使のテーゼ), is incredibly iconic and well known amongst all fans of anime. The music of Evangelion was composed by Shirou Sagisu and combines both elements of intense action and drama, to sombre moments of loneliness. I also remember the music being incredibly eclectic with the use of popular music tunes such as Bart Howard’s Fly Me to the Moon, or one incredible surreal and unforgettable moment in the End of Evangelion that used what is pretty much a pop song reminiscent of The Beatles. Be prepared for a mind-bending mix of giant robot fights, psychoanalysis and lots of suffering if you’ve not seen Evangelion before.
3. Steins;Gate (シュタインズ・ゲート, 2014, White Fox)
An anime adaptation of the visual novel of the same name, Steins;Gate definitely falls into the modern classic category for me. It’s hard to really talk about Steins;Gate without spoiling it, but let’s just say we follow the oddball antics of Rintaro Okabe’s daily life as a university student before he and his friends quickly become in over their heads involved in something none of them ever expected to get caught up in.
I don’t really remember too much about the music in Steins;Gate, but what I do know is scenes ranged from relaxed, to tense, or heart-breaking, and the music definitely served to accentuate those feelings. Be prepared for a bit of a slow start, going into one of the best anime made in the 2010s. El Psy Congroo.
4. Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works (2014, Ufotable)
Okay, first off, the 2006 adaptation of Fate/stay night by Studio Deen never happened. Also, the Fate franchise as a whole is almost impenetrable with countless spin-offs and one of the world’s highest grossing mobile games in Fate/Grand Order. It’s easy to get lost in the myriad of Fate related things, but if you had to consume one piece of Fate media (aside from the original visual novel), it’s hard to argue against Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works.
Following the adventures of Shirou Emiya, Saber and best girl Rin Tohsaka, we see our character caught up in a war between mages and heroic spirits from the past for the wish-fulfilling holy grail. What makes UBW so special in my eyes is how it doesn’t really feel like you’re watching an anime series when you watch it. The animation, the effects, the cinematography, the music, everything comes together to make create just an incredible fantasy show in general, never mind an anime.
5. K-On!
If you’ve seen K-On! before, you’ll probably notice that the theme of the show of high school girls playing in a band matches quite closely with the theme of my Senpai EPs. If you thought that, then yes, you’d be correct, K-On! was definitely a big influence. In a different tact to the rest of the shows I’ve listed so far, this show has no action or high drama, and simply focuses on the day to day activities of Yui, Mio, Ritsu, Tsumugi and Azusa playing music in their club band.
If you want a comfy and relaxing experience, K-On! is your show. Also, the anime is all about music and features many fun J-rock tracks in line with the theme of the show. I’ll also always appreciate K-On! as one of the shows that really put the incredible studio Kyoto Animation on the map.
I think all of us are at least aware of Sailor Moon and how it popularised the magical girl genre. So yes, ostensibly, Madoka Magica is a magical girl show. But if you are expecting butterflies, rainbows, and the power of love and friendship, you have another thing coming. I don’t want to spoil the show past this, but it is probably one of the most subversive pieces of anime media I have ever watched.
The opening theme is Connect by ClariS and the combination of the music and animation gives nothing away to the actual contents of the show. The score itself is sometimes beautiful, sometimes dark, and sometimes both. Madoka Magica is definitely a show I can describe as an experience, and it’s one I definitely recommend.
Shirobako has possibly one of my favourite opening scenes in anime ever. It shows Aoi Miyamori and her four friends in their animation club in high school promising to each other that they would all make an anime together, your usual anime dream affair. The next scene brings you straight down to earth, showing Aoi looking miserable stuck in her car in the height of Tokyo rush hour. This show tries to paint of a more realistic picture of the anime industry, showing panics to get shots and cuts together, delayed episodes and creative differences.
What I love though about the show though, is despite how down to Earth the show is, and just how relatable it must feel for anybody working in the anime industry to watch, the core of the show is that the reason any of these people are putting themselves through the deadlines and the stress, is that they all love anime and they all love creating anime. It’s very relatable as somebody who is in a different field and the show has an amazing emotional payoff.
I can’t remember exactly what time period it was but I remember almost every anime released was a romantic comedy. Obviously, every anime now is an isekai show (異世界, alternate world), but there was this time when romcoms were king. You can imagine that it would take a lot for a romcom to stand out amidst the crowd, but I think Toradora! does that handily. The show follows Ryuuji and Taiga help each other pursue their respective high school crushes, but in doing so, the pair grow closer to each other in the act.
Toradora! features many comedic moments, genuinely well written and likeable characters, and a compelling plot and romance. It’s also legitimately heart-warming and it brings a smile to my face when I recall this show.
9. Konosuba: God’s Blessing on this Wonderful World! Staff)
Did I mention that every anime nowadays is an isekai? Konosuba is an isekai. It’s also the first show on this list that is still ongoing with two seasons, two OVAs and a film. But yeah, as an isekai show, Konosuba has a lot of competition. What it does so well apart from being a comedy, is that the characters are all kind of awful in their own way, but that’s what makes them so enjoyable to watch. It reminds me a lot of British humour in a lot of ways.
Following the antics of Kazuma after being reborn in a fantasy world, the useless goddess Aqua, the explosion loli Megumi and the masochistic crusader Darkness, Konosuba is one of the funniest animes I have watched. You can’t help but laugh at their ridiculous antics and I highly recommend it to anybody that hasn’t seen it.
10. A Place Further than the Universe (宇宙よりも遠い場所, 2018, Madhouse)
For my final entry, I tried to think of an anime that really left an impression on me in the last two years and A Place Further than the Universe is my definite pick. The story is about four girls who through various circumstances end up going on a trip to Antarctica together on the surface. It really feels like a modern adventure story and by undertaking this journey the four girls grow, learning about themselves and each other.
It’s a genuinely heart-warming experience watching this show and with time I feel like it has the potential to be considered one of the modern greats. If you haven’t heard of or watched it, A Place Further than the Universe is definitely worth your time!
So that’s my list at the top of my head right now. I find it really difficult to come up with top ten lists, but I feel like the ten I’ve included are representative of my overall tastes. I kind of stopped talking about music part way through as well, but rest assured all these shows have good soundtracks that definitely add to what make each show great in my opinion. Anyway, hopefully you end up re-watching some classics, or find something new to watch.
I’m currently working on Senpai III during this time and it will be a full-length album, as well as telling the story of the girls from the Senpai EPs trying to figure out their lives as they graduate high school.
Stay safe and well and wish you all the very best!
EXCLUSIVE: INTERVIEW WITH JB BRUBAKER OF AUGUST BURNS RED !!
“What I Don’t Like Is That Metalcore Has Become Almost a Dirty Word. The Genre Got So Oversaturated That It Got Predictable And Boring. It Was Around That Time That We Started To Talk Publicly About Breathing New Life And Originality Back Into Metalcore. We Also Started To Steer Away From The Word And Were Just Calling Ourselves a Metal Band.”
DISC REVIEW “GUARDIANS”
「AUGUST BURNS RED
BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME
EXCLUSIVE: INTERVIEW WITH HARRISON WHITE OF NOVENA !!
“We Felt That Ross & Gareth, The Two Tones They Created Were Distinct, Rich And Balanced Each Other Out Nicely. It Really Gave Us a Wide Palette Of Colours To Paint With On This Album. We Love Playing With That Duality Of Light/Dark, Fragile/Destructive etc.”
EXCLUSIVE: INTERVIEW WITH HOZOJI MATHESON-MARGULLIS OF HELMS ALEE !!
“And These Days, Pretty Much Every Single One Of My Best Female Friends Is An Extremely Talented And Active Musician. Many Of Them Play In Heavy Rock Bands. So The Feeling Of Imbalance Is Shifting To An Equilibrium In My World. I Can Say With Confidence That I Feel Accepted And Valued By The Male Musicians In My Community.”
“Capturing Emotions In a Painting Is Similar To Showing Depth And Light. If It Is Not There, If It Is Missing, The Art Is Simply Flat And It Does Not Look Good”
EXCLUSIVE: INTERVIEW WITH SONDRE SKOLLEVOLL OF MORON POLICE !!
“A Lot Of The Music From The Super Famicom Was Also Very Proggy! The Soundtrack Of Secret of Mana (Seiken Densetsu 2) Was Mindblowing When I First Heard It! Beautiful Melodies Mixed With Interesting Technical Parts, Weird Time-Signatures And Atmospheric Landscapes.”
DISC REVIEW “A BOAT ON THE SEA”
MARQUEE/AVALON から日本盤の発売も決定。
